About the role

We're seeking an experienced Senior Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) to join our Cloud Infrastructure team in Supermetics. 

This role is based at our headquarters in Helsinki.

You'll make an impact by:

  • Your primary focus will be empowering our development teams to efficiently and reliably use and/or run databases from/on Kubernetes. As a subject matter expert, you'll guide teams on database architecture, enabling them to scale and optimize solutions to meet growing data demands. 
  • Driving the efficient and reliable management of databases in Kubernetes and cloud environments, leveraging tools like Aiven, Crossplane, and Google ConfigSync. 
  • Your work will ensure our platform evolves to handle increasing complexity and volume, supporting both centralized and self-service database models across technologies like Redis, PostgreSQL, and ClickHouse. 
  • This role is crucial as we navigate expanding infrastructure needs and team transitions in the coming year.

 Your day-to-day work and responsibilities will include:

  • Design, implement, and operate highly available and scalable database clusters on Kubernetes for PostgreSQL, Redis, and Clickhouse.
  • Integrate and manage databases using Kubernetes operators (e.g., Aiven, Crossplane, Google Config Sync).
  • Implement and automate key database operations such as backup/restore, disaster recovery, performance tuning, and security hardening within the Kubernetes ecosystem.
  • Champion best practices for database reliability, performance, and security within Kubernetes.
  • Act as an internal consultant, providing guidance and support to development teams on database architecture, best practices, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with development teams to understand their database needs and translate them into robust Kubernetes-native solutions or 3rd party provider configurations easily accessible for our internal users.
  • Proactively identify and address potential database-related issues before they impact production.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for database deployments and operational procedures.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in Kubernetes, database technologies, and operator frameworks.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our database infrastructure and tooling.

 This role is for you if you have:

  • Strong background in database administration, with deep expertise in at least one of PostgreSQL, Redis, or Clickhouse.
  • Extensive experience managing and operating databases within Kubernetes.
  • Proven ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot complex database deployments on Kubernetes.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes operators, Aiven Operator, Crossplane, or Google Config Sync is highly desired.
  • Experience migrating databases to Kubernetes is a significant advantage.
  • Proficiency with Kubernetes concepts, including deployments, services, statefulsets, and resource management.
  • Proficiency with Helm or Kustomize.
  • Experience with Kubernetes observability tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Solid understanding of database performance tuning, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with cloud providers, such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with other databases like Elasticsearch.
  • Familiarity with data lake concepts and implementations.
  • Experience with Kafka or other messaging pub/sub systems.
  • Experience with Time Series databases such as Prometheus, TimescaleDB, VictoriaMetrics
  • Experience developing software with Go or PHP.
  • Experience developing Kubernetes operators and/or Helm charts for databases.
