Metro State University, Minnesota’s public, urban university, and four-time recipient of the Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award is seeking to hire an Internship & Apprenticeship Coordinator. This is a full-time probationary position within the Career Center in the Student Success Division.
Responsibilities:
This position exists to build partnerships with employers, which lead to increased opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, other workplace-based experiences, and employment for students. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing the university-wide internship and apprenticeship program through advising, employer relationship cultivation and management, continuous process and program improvement, and a student-centered approach. Major responsibilities include:
- Coordinate internships and apprenticeships for students to gain experience prior to graduation.
- Consult with academic departments (including faculty coordinators) to facilitate sharing best practices to comply with Metro State policies and procedures, and assist departments in identifying additional sites.
- Connect internship/apprenticeship work to broader collegiate learning strategies including High Impact Practices and the Career Readiness Project.
- Develop strategic employer partnerships to enhance student access to internships, apprenticeships, and other workplace-based activities.
- Create and market job fairs for employers, facilitate open house activities for specific colleges, and create individual info-sessions to stimulate student awareness of employers’ opportunities, and provide networking and relationship development opportunities for employers, faculty, and students.
- Develop and manage projects to successfully connect students with employers.
Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position:
- Bachelor’s degree plus four (4) years of advanced professional experience in post-secondary experiential education, academic advising, career development, human resources/training and/or employer relations; or, Master’s degree plus three (3) years of the same experiences noted prior; or, equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education, and/or advanced professional experience.
- Advanced knowledge of career management and/or workplace-based learning.
- Experience cultivating partnerships to create internships, apprenticeships and/or other workplace-based learning activities.
- Experience navigating, interpreting and adhering to institutional policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated competency and experience with best practices in educating and partnering with racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse populations.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships, manage, and work effectively with multiple stakeholders (including, but not limited to employer partners, academic departments, student services, and Minnesota State partner institutions).
Preferred Qualification
- Master’s degree.
- Experience coordinating internships in a university setting or building organizational relationships to recruit candidates in an employer setting.
- Experience with project management or program assessment sufficient to independently manage large projects of high complexity.
- Demonstrated understanding that workplace-based learning experiences, internships, and apprenticeships impact social and career mobility of first-generation, low-income, and historically underrepresented students.
- Demonstrated experience working with employers to promote welcoming and supportive work environments for racially, culturally and linguistically diverse students and graduates.
- Working knowledge of employment database management systems (i.e., Handshake).
