Job Description

Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant to work in our Vascular Surgery department. This position will primarily be outpatient focused (>95%) in our Vein Clinic; there may be an opportunity for inpatient focus in the future.

This Advanced Practice provider will primarily focus on: clinical evaluation, ordering diagnostic testing, pharmacologic treatment, surgery recommendations and minor procedures including sclerotherapy and vein ablation treatment.

Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00am-5:00pm)

  • No call 
  • No nights/weekends/holidays

Location: Primarily Geneva; occasional work at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH)

Essential Functions: 

  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities which may include diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
  • Responsible for health outcome of an assigned patient population.
  • Confers with collaborating physician and other health professionals in area of clinical expertise.
  • Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Mentors graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to area of expertise. 

Responsibilities

  • The APP will assist in outpatient patient care, management of in-box, participate in inpatient surgical consult, and provide a seamless transition from the procedural area to the ICU or PACU for continued recovery.
  • This position will focus on specialized perioperative care, see inpatient consults and support an ambulatory practice where patients would be directly seen either in consultation or follow up.
  • On the post-operative side, the individual provides comprehensive bedside management throughout the hospitalization up and through the patient’s discharge
  • Works alongside the critical care anesthesia team, ensuring recovery and optimal management by consolidating consulting service recommendations and enacting the Vascular Surgeon’s directives
  • The APP will streamline communications with referring physicians both internal and external to Northwestern Medicine
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities which may include diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems
  • Confers with collaborating physician and other health professionals in area of clinical expertise
  • Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise
  • Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to area of expertise
  • Conducts comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations in clinical area
  • Prescribes/orders medications, therapies; orders/interprets laboratory tests, x-rays and procedures according to clinical privileges
  • Documents in the medical record all care and education provided and/or procedures performed for which the Licensed Advanced Practice Provider is responsible
  • Integrates research based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making
  • Maintains certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging
  • Participates in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate
  • Provides comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families
  • Provides formal education to both internal and external groups pertinent to area of specialty
  • Participates in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient population as appropriate

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing OR master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
