EH&S SENIOR SPECIALIST - ENVIRONMENTAL - Indianapolis, IN
The EH&S Senior Specialist - Environmental is a highly specialized technical expert with ownership responsibility for environmental compliance, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting. This position will drive improvements in electricity usage, waste to landfill, and water consumption as well as play a key role in driving engagement on environmental topics with Allegion's teammates. The EH&S Senior Specialist - Environmental will have ownership of the wastewater treatment plant operations, and waste management programs. This position will create, manage, and lead projects across multiple teams and reports to the site Environmental, Health and Safety Manager. Based on level of experience, this role could be an individual contributor position or a people leader with up to four (4) direct reports.
What You Will Do:
- Environmental Program Ownership
- Own and administer the site’s environmental programs including creating procedures, maintaining records, reporting internally and externally, and developing teammate training
- Lead the onsite wastewater treatment operations including directing daily work of the wastewater treatment operators, implement projects to improve efficiency and reduce the potential for system upsets
- Devise strategies to meet corporate environmental and sustainability objectives. Develop targets and monitor performance, using established metrics and KPIs (leading/lagging); proactively identify and manage projects to reduce the site’s impacts on the environment.
- Cross-Functional Project Leadership
- Lead and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote EHS excellence and drive risk reduction.
- Create, manage and lead environmental projects across multiple departments and teams
- Perform risk assessments and impact and aspects analyses; identify priorities; and drive risk reduction projects in the spirit of continual improvement
- Technical Leadership and Systems Management
- Own ISO14001 and 45001 systems and serve as a lead auditor for EHS Management Systems
- Lead investigations into environmental incidents
- Analyze data and drive improvements to programs and processes
- Serve as technical subject matter expert for wastewater treatment operations including resolution of upset conditions and innovative treatment technologies
- Compliance and Regulatory Leadership
- Lead site’s involvement in Indiana’s Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) and Partner’s for Sustainability efforts by attending meetings, implementing best practices, and sharing information.
- Conduct internal compliance and ISO inspections/audits
- Prepare and submit regulatory reports, applications and plans as required
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of environmental legislation and initiatives
- Operational Excellence
- Drive workplace organization, 5S, and TPM throughout the wastewater treatment department
- Provide technical guidance and oversight of wastewater treatment technician(s); including day-to-day support
What You Need to Succeed:
- A degree in a relevant discipline, e.g., Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry
- Five or more years of experience in an industrial setting
- Preferred knowledge of Indiana and US environmental regulations and ISO 14001 Standards
- Preferred Indiana Waste Water Treatment Operator License or the ability to obtain one in the first six months
- Preferred experience with air permitting and reporting and hazardous waste management
- Extensive experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, specifically metal hydroxide precipitation
- Demonstrated experience in environmental program development and ownership
- Passion for people and the environment
- Ability to work in both a team and individual setting
