Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The role is responsible for developing and industrializing premium optical fiber manufacturing processes by applying the scientific method to identify and resolve cost, capacity, and capability limitations. This position drives improvements in manufacturing performance—including yield, process rate, machine utilization, quality, sustainability, and energy efficiency—while supporting the design, development, optimization, and implementation of new and existing premium fiber products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Learn & understand process & equipment functions in area of responsibility.
- Apply the scientific method to Corning’s Fiber Manufacturing processes to identify problems or opportunities for improvement and translate those observations into experimental plans
- Analyze experimental data output and communicate conclusions
- Develop new incremental process advancement opportunities
- Troubleshoot existing problems for products or processes already in production.
- Translate early development success to at scale, industrialized manufacturing processes and products
- Direct the day-to-day activities of a technician or junior engineer as needed for project work
Education and Experience – Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, materials science, ceramic engineering, glass science, or similar discipline
- Minimum 5 years of experience using the scientific method and fundamental engineering principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed process experiments
- Experience using measured or modeled data to inform decisions and actions leading to better more efficient outcomes
