About the role

Position Summary:

The Archive Manager is a critical member of the Archive Department and is responsible for the design and evolution of the APMG Archive and has direct oversight of many of the core functions of the day-to-day operations of the Archive. This position will have a broad perspective on all content produced by the American Public Media Group’s content areas, including MPR News, Classical MPR, The Current and our national portfolio of produced and distributed programs, and will work to create systems, projects, and relationships in service of the goals and mission of the individual business units as well as the umbrella organization, APMG.

Working with partners in Media Production, Broadcast Operations, Information Technology, Digital Products, Content, Legal, and other departments, this position will: evolve and identify the Archive’s philosophies, priorities and goals; design and execute against strategies, staffing needs, and budget criteria; design and manage projects, systems, and user experiences; and lead staff and interns/fellows to implement work plans.

The Archive Manager takes a lead role in developing, planning and implementing training sessions for APMG staff and regularly provides individual feedback and support to the Archive team. The Archive Manager is responsible for the transfer and review of materials and interview materials to local, regional, and national archive partners. The Manager is responsible for the continued growth and development of the institutional archive in accordance with the goals and priorities of the organization. In addition, the Manager plays an essential role in supporting the continued development of our public-facing archive portal and enhancing our audience experience in accessing and representing our archival content.

The Archive Manager will support APMG diversity and inclusion goals within and on behalf of the Archive team and will work to ensure the APMG Archive serves and represents new audiences and communities in alignment with our company values.  The Archive Manager will also focus on expanding community partnerships and increasing usage and accessibility of the APMG Archive materials while looking for new revenue opportunities.

Expected Compensation Range: $80,000 - $86,000/yr. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.

 

Your Responsibilities:

 Daily Preservation of Broadcast & Digital Content

  • Oversee the ingestion, organization, and long-term preservation of APM and MPR-produced content.
  • Develop and implement best practices for digital asset management and metadata standards.
  • Collaborate with Media Production, Broadcast Operations, Digital, Legal, and other departments to ensure seamless content archiving.
  • Maintain and enhance archive systems for efficient internal and external content retrieval.
  • Lead the Archives team in executing archival workflows, system updates, and preservation strategies.

 Preservation & Presentation of Historical and At-Risk Media

  • Develop and oversee strategies for digitizing and preserving legacy and at-risk media assets.
  • Support the evolution of public-facing archival access, enhancing audience engagement with historical content.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with regional and national archival institutions.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to integrate archive initiatives into broader company objectives.

Revenue Growth & Strategic Development:

  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities to fund preservation and digitization efforts.
  • Develop revenue-generating opportunities through rights and licensing of archival content.
  • Explore and implement new business models to maximize the value of archival assets.
  • Collaborate with Development, Legal, and Finance teams to expand revenue streams.

Team Leadership:

  • Manage, lead and train a team accomplished archivists working in audio, digital and object preservation
