Job Duties
The Intelligence Specialist is part of the Special Operations Unit located at Department of Corrections’ Headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. This position will be based at the Special Operations Unit Work Center located on the grounds of State Farm Correctional Center in Powhatan, Virginia.
The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) recognizes that the covert activities of gangs and other criminal enterprises pose a direct threat to the safety and security of its correctional facilities and the community at large. The development and dissemination of intelligence relative to these illicit activities and other security threat matters is essential in meeting this ongoing challenge. The VADOC Operations & Logistics Unit is responsible for receiving, reviewing, creating, and disseminating security threat information and intelligence that will greatly enhance the Department’s ability to meet its public safety mission.
This position provides supervision and guidance to a team of analysts within the Special Operations Unit designated to gather, review, analyze, and disseminate comprehensive security threat information and intelligence. It provides for the collection, evaluation, and analysis of information related to criminal and/or disruptive behavior in an effort to address, anticipate, prevent, or monitor any such behavior or activities. It utilizes investigative and evaluation techniques to show methods and trend and continually evaluates the effectiveness of strategic, operational and tactical intelligence from both proactive and reactive perspectives. It maintains liaison with the regional leadership, correctional facilities, probation & parole districts, supervisors and the intelligence operatives of law enforcement and criminal justice agencies -- Federal, State and local.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of methods and techniques related to intelligence gathering processes. Working knowledge of interviewing and investigative techniques, preferably related to gangs and other security threat groups (hate groups, terrorists, cults). Ability to plan and direct the work of others. Ability to gather and analyze information, compile reports, determine appropriate actions, make recommendations, and oversee and evaluate effectiveness of outcomes. Ability to interact with diverse groups and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
The selected candidate must have the ability to obtain a DCJS certification as a General Instructor within 12 months of employment.
Additional Considerations
Knowledge of agency policies and procedures. Working knowledge of Corrections Information System (VACORIS). Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish
