About the role

The Paramedic receives emergency calls from dispatcher and promptly, safely responds to assignments. Ensures the safety of the patient and other personnel at all times

1. Takes histories and performs physical exams as indicated on patients in the field

2. Initiates indicated treatment modalities according to written policies and medical control physician orders

3. Supervises all persons on the scene involved with patient care within the scope of protocol

4. Becomes the triage officer at mass casualty incidents until relieved by superiors

5. Accompanies the patient to the ED and monitors and treats the patient during transportation

6. Transports the patient to the appropriate emergency department and reports orally to the nurse and/or physician

7. Writes a comprehensive report documenting the situation at the scene, physical exam, orders received, treatments rendered, response to these treatments, and other information deemed pertinent

8. Maintains ambulance logs and submits detailed incident, accident, occurrence reports and statements when required

9. Operates the vehicle in a safe manner at all times

10. Maintains ambulances and other emergency vehicles and equipment in efficient working order, makes minor repairs and replacements when necessary, and cleans and restocks the equipment and vehicles

11. Reports any obvious mechanical malfunctions or deficiencies to the supervisor immediately verbally and/or in writing

12. Communicates with patients family and friends at the scene

13. Communicates with other health team members in the community and at the hospital

14. Assists with triage and other prehospital duties

15. Performs EKGs in the ED as well as on the ambulance

16. Performs paramedic level skills in the ED with the exception of drug administration

17. Paramedics are responsible for IV drip maintenance for those medications noted in their protocols

18. Charts findings of physical exam, history, and treatments rendered on the ED chart

19. Performs heavy and awkward lofting of patients in difficult areas and terrain

Four year high school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of training program as and Emergency Medical Technician, EMT Paramedic, and other protocol update programs as currently required.
