About the role

Job Overview:

The Principal Data Scientist is responsible for leading the research and development of state-of-the-art machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches applied to educational measurement, particularly for text and speech.  Alongside measurement scientists, this position is responsible for creating prototypes that are evaluated for accuracy, reliability and fairness relative to their use case, and supports machine learning engineers as they transform the prototypes into production code.

This position leads a team of data scientists and is responsible for advancing the research agenda at Cambium Assessment, including publishing and presenting at conferences.  Currently, the focus of the research is on the fine-tuning of open-source large language models for the scoring and feedback of student speech and text, with some focus on text generation for other business uses.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Act as lead resource for the latest developments in large language models to identify those most relevant for CAI

  • Build prototypes and methodologies that serve to illustrate the applications of fine-tuned LLMs according to business needs

  • Build and maintain a research agenda around the use of LLMs or other methods to support educational measurement

  • Lead a team of data scientists in building prototypes and methodologies and research

  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team that implements, trains, and deploys ML/AI models that are fair, valid, and reliable

  • cultivates and maintains a leadership position in the field of data science and educational measurement

Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, computer science, data science or other computation field required

  • 7+ years of experience in the prototyping and use of data science in educational measurement

  • 2+ years leading data science teams

  • 7+ years working in multidisciplinary teams of psychometricians, engineers, hand-scoring experts, and item developers
