Senior Director, Department of Spiritual Care and Education; Mount Sinai Hospital; Full Time; Days

Reporting to MSHS’s Deputy Chief Clinical Officer, the Senior Director of the Department of Spiritual Care and Education oversees the departments of spiritual care and education across the health system. The directors of these departments report to the Senior Director of the DSCE, who ensures a coherent and unified approach to the clinical, educational, fiscal, human resources, and administrative activities of the spiritual care departments, as well as the pursuit of MSHS’s overall goals and priorities. The Senior Director of the DSCE oversees Mount Sinai’s Clinical Pastoral Education programs, which are embedded within these departments, ensuring compliance with all accreditation requirements.

Working under the leadership of the Deputy Chief Clinical Officer, the Senior Director of the DSCE collaborates with other clinical disciplines to maximize the delivery of excellent, efficient, and compassionate patient care. The Senior Director of the DSCE works with leaders across MSHS to ensure the ongoing integration of spiritual care into the institution.
 

1.    Set the strategic direction for the Department of Spiritual Care and Education across MSHS, developing measurable goals and benchmarks, tracking performance, and maintaining accountability for meeting these goals.
2.    Supervise the directors of the spiritual care departments across MSHS and coordinate personnel activities including hiring, performance appraisals, training, disciplining, and staff engagement and development.
3.    Support spiritual care department directors in providing excellent patient care, maximizing clinical impact, deepening interdisciplinary partnerships, and collecting and reviewing appropriate data.
4.    Foster an environment of open communication, teamwork, and continuous learning in support of the goals and activities of the Department of Spiritual Care and Education and Mount Sinai Health System.
5.    Oversee the Clinical Pastoral Education programs, ensuring high quality education, appropriate clinical placements, and compliance with all accreditation requirements.
6.    Under the leadership of the Deputy Chief Clinical Officer, partner with leaders of other clinical disciplines to provide the best possible patient care and educate interdisciplinary colleagues, including new hires, about spiritual care.
7.    Participate, as appropriate, in system-wide initiatives focused on quality improvement, revenue cycle, Epic optimization, patient experience, regulatory compliance, ethics cases, end-of-life care, complex discharges, etc.
8.    Participate, as appropriate, in system-wide initiatives focused on employee wellbeing, engagement, and belonging.
9.    Participate, as appropriate, in system-wide initiatives focused on community engagement, with a focus on building and maintaining relationships with houses of worship.
10.    Oversee the development and monitoring of spiritual care budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
11.    Oversee the development and maintenance of policies and procedures related to spiritual care, ensuring quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
12.    As appropriate, conduct research to contribute to the field of spiritual care and make presentations at professional meetings and in other academic, community, healthcare, and faith-based settings.
13.    Adhere to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains and maintain board certification by a national chaplaincy organization (listed above and below).
14.    Perform other duties as required.

• Graduate-level theological degree from a college, university, or theological school accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
• Completion of a minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).
• Five years? experience as a department director.
• Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by Association of Professional Chaplains; Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains; National Association of Catholic Chaplains; or Spiritual Care Association.
• Certification as a Certified Educator by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education is desirable but not required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; understanding of Epic or similar EHR.
