Position Overview:

As part of Convatec’s Applied Research organization within the Biomedical Sciences team, the Senior Manager of Biointerfaces and Regenerative Engineering is responsible for leading and empowering a team of scientists, engineers and technicians to deliver a portfolio of technical projects across the product lifecycle in line with ConvaTec’s values and high performing team principles. Projects range from innovation to product development, claims support and lifecycle management. This includes proof of principle and proof of concept experimentation, applying molecular biology, tissue culture and biochemical techniques to further projects in materials science and our four business units. Reporting to the Director of Biomedical Sciences, this role requires a blend of strategic leadership, technical expertise, and a collaborative mindset to deliver impactful results.

The Senior Manager partners with various internal teams, including Applied Research, New Product Development, Marketing, Medical and Clinical Affairs, Market Access, and External Innovation, to develop technologies that can be transitioned into product development.

The role demands the ability to manage a high-performing team and influence strategies, allocate resources effectively, and ensure projects align with Convatec’s portfolio and market opportunities. This individual is expected to foster strong internal and external relationships, contributing to Convatec’s reputation as a leader in innovation and scientific excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and Manage the Biointerfaces and Regenerative Engineering Team

  • Translate business strategies into clear, actionable goals and plans for a team.
  • Align team with strategy and set measurable performance expectations.
  • Allocate resources across near- and long-term priorities, maintaining flexibility to adapt to changing needs.
  • Anticipate challenges and opportunities to optimize team performance.
  • Build relationships with peers, senior leaders, and direct reports to foster collaboration and shared goals.
  • Enhance team effectiveness by fostering both individual growth and building collective capability.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets aligned with business goals.
  • Optimize resources (personnel, equipment, and other assets) to support objectives.
  • Conduct talent reviews, performance evaluations, and drive succession planning.
  • Track and meet KPIs such as project timelines, training completion, and operating metrics.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate policies and procedures.
  • Identify and implement process improvements for improving productivity.

Drive Technical Programs

  • Serve as the technical liaison for Biointerfaces and Regenerative Engineering, collaborating across teams to drive technical projects aligned with organizational goals.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in Biointerfaces and Regenerative Engineering, facilitating sharing of knowledge and scientific insights across teams.
  • Clearly communicate technical concepts and updates to leadership and cross-functional teams, for alignment and buy-in.
  • Provide strategic insights to support decision-making and align projects with overall objectives.
  • Build and enhance lab capabilities for experimentation, prototyping, and testing.
  • Keep team abreast of industry advancements by monitoring technical publications and patent landscapes.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with suppliers and external partners to accelerate developments.

Skills & Experience:

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in research and development
  • Experience developing medical devices under quality systems compliant with ISO 13485 and FDA requirements
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with a track record of effective collaboration across both internal and external stakeholders.
