Job Summary

This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.

The Sr/Field Engineer-Structures support the Managers of Engineering in overseeing the daily operations of the assigned craft, encompassing infrastructure construction, maintenance, and inspection. Manage a blend of office and field duties, regardless of weather conditions, to sustain a round-the-clock operation, supporting the assigned territory.

Essential Functions

  •  Plan and execute construction and maintenance activities across infrastructure assets to include bridges, culverts, stations, and OCS structures 
  • Coordinate major track outages in collaboration with various departments to maintain established work schedules.    
  • Monitor procurement and ensure timely delivery, storage, and installation of materials and services.    
  • Provide technical support in the field, including emergency response and weekend/night work.    
  • Ensure compliance with FRA, local, and national construction and maintenance codes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 3 years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 5 years of relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven leadership skills, adept at effectively communicating with diverse teams, both internally and externally.    
  • Extensive understanding and practical application of railroad operations, operating regulations, and divisional procedures.    
  • Proficient in project management, encompassing scheduling, budgeting, estimating, and coordinating with various technical disciplines.    
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office suite, proficient in creating spreadsheets, presentations, memos, and utilizing other applications essential for job performance.

Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

The salary/hourly range is a target of 110,000 for the Field Engineer and a target of 122,000 for the Sr Field Engineer. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
