Job Description:
The Audiology Externship at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center provides a fourth-year audiology student opportunity to participate in diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology care to the adult population. The Extern will work alongside clinical audiologists, all of whom have earned a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Using clinical judgment, select and implement most appropriate evaluation methods for diverse patient needs. Determine if the patient is a hearing aid candidate or would benefit from assistive listening devices. Provide care to patients with implantable hearing technologies including cochlear implants, BAHA and Esteem implants. Perform and interpret electrophysiologic assessment including VEMP, EcochG and ABR. Document all pertinent information in aChart (audiology) TIMS office based system (hearing aid center).
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
-Reviews results and recommendations to patient regarding diagnostic tests and rehabilitative options
-Determines if the patient is a hearing aid candidate or would benefit from assistive listening devices
-Performs Diagnostic assessment of hearing loss and hearing rehabilitation options
-Exercises clinical judgment in selecting and implementing most appropriate evaluation methods for diverse patient needs
-Greets patients, identify oneself as an audiologist and explains hearing and balance testing
-Selects appropriate hearing aid device for patient based on audiologic test results.
-Provides quality ear mold impressions for hearing aids, swim plugs and custom noise protection.
-Provides appropriate programming of selected amplification device.
-Provides care to patients with implantable hearing technologies including cochlear implants, BAHA and Esteem implants
-Performs and interprets electrophysiologic assessment including VEMP, EcochG and ABR
-Obtains telemetry measures in operating room for cochlear implant procedures
-Works collaboratively with Otolaryngology nursing staff to provide excellent patient care.
-Reviews abnormal test results with referring physician
-Provides written educational material and reviews with patient/family
-Provides occasional cross coverage at all audiology sites, including Burlington, Peabody and Lexington.
-Provides patient with written and verbal instructions regarding battery use, care and maintenance of the hearing aid.
-Troubleshoots repairs devices if possible.
-Determines if hearing aid needs to be returned to manufacturer for repair.
-Addresses any issues or concerns the patient or family member may have regarding their hearing aids
