Collins Aerospace in Wilson, NC is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to join our team for manufacturing complex fire suppression systems. This position is for a skilled engineer with deep knowledge and highly developed technical expertise in manufacturing and assembly of metal components, pressure systems, mechanical and electrical assemblies. This professional should be familiar with processes such as machining, welding, brazing, etch/laser marking, chemical treatment, and metal coatings. This candidate must excel at critical thinking and problem solving while applying their engineering skills to solve complex issues while working under limited direction. This role will work as a cross-functional team member in close collaboration with design engineers, operations, and quality team members. Relocation assistance is available.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement for manufacturing the required equipment, fixtures, tooling, gaging, processes or specifications for production. Such design and development may include new or revised processes.

  • Identify and execute process and product improvements, as well as review of manufacturability of existing and future product in alignment with key process indicators (KPI’s) such as yield, cost and scrap.

  • Lead and implement continuous improvement initiatives of manufacturing equipment and processes in work cells utilizing lean principles such as: 5S Workplace Organization, Error Proofing, Total Productive Maintenance, Kanban/Pull Systems, Set-Up Reduction(SMED), Standard Work, Value Stream Mapping, and Visual Factory.

  • Investigate new technological advances in support of manufacturing processes.

  • Develops/Conducts tests and measurements throughout stages of production to determine control over applicable variables; and services, troubleshoots and solves production process problems with processes or equipment already in operation.

  • Follow compliance and lead change management for manufacturing processes that may include assembly, fabrication, painting, marking, machining and welding.

  • Lead actions involving new capital equipment projects, such as writing capital funding requests, Statement of Work & Validation requirements; interface with vendors, contractors from installation through release to production.

  • Reviews and validates recommendations regarding manufacturability of existing and future products and advises modifications or adaptations to address quality, customer, product, or productivity constraints.

  • Manage programs for production equipment such as etch or marking machines.

  • Works with EH&S to identify and resolve ergonomic and other safety concerns specific to equipment and tools.

  • Serve as a key member for Material Review Board (MRB) to oversee relevant product/material non-conformance disposition for repair, rework, or scrap to include writing procedures for repair or rework.

  • Lead PFMEA team reviews and updates for products.

  • Provide leadership to lower-level engineers, technicians, and operation team members.

Basic Qualifications:

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-M/part-120/subpart-C/section-120.62

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience

  • Solid Works or other CAD proficiency

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated use of lean principles.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD or SolidWorks systems, Lab View

  • GD&T Drawing techniques

  • Working knowledge of electro mechanical assemblies and pressure vessels

  • Experience of Military / Aerospace procedures, specifications, regulations, AS9100

  • Process automation

  • Pressure systems and vessels

  • Familiarity with SAP or Solumina
