Responsibilities

The Supervising Pharmacist works under the general supervision of the Director(s) of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for the operational, clinical, regulatory, and personnel oversight of assigned pharmacy areas.

 

Operational Oversight

  • Oversees pharmacy operations within the assigned service area (e.g., IV Room, Day Shift, Evening/Night Shift, Park Care Pavilion, Dobbs Ferry Pavilion).
  • Assists with staff scheduling and daily assignments to ensure adequate staffing coverage.
  • Supervises staff pharmacists and pharmacy technicians within the assigned area.
  • Directs and inspects the work of pharmacy personnel to ensure accurate, timely, and safe medication distribution.
  • Monitors workflow, resolves routine operational issues, and escalates unresolved matters to the Director.
  • Maintains the physical environment of the pharmacy, ensuring compliance with safety, cleanliness, and professional standards.
  • Performs staff pharmacist duties as needed to maintain service continuity.
  • Maintains proper documentation and accountability of controlled substances in accordance with DEA and New York State regulations.
  • Clinical and Quality Oversight

  • Ensures completion and documentation of fall-related medication reviews, medication reconciliations, adverse drug reaction (ADR) reports, warfarin monitoring, Age-Friendly Health System initiatives, clinical audits, and assigned performance measures.
  • Monitors and reports adverse drug events, medication errors, and safety metrics.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors evidence-based protocols, order sets, and clinical guidelines.
  • Supports medication safety initiatives and quality improvement projects.
  • Regulatory and Accreditation Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with New York State Board of Pharmacy regulations, federal pharmacy laws (DEA, CMS, HRSA as applicable), and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Maintains adherence to accreditation standards including Joint Commission and ASHP standards.
  • Prepares and submits regulatory, operational, and performance reports as required.
  • Assists with updating and maintaining pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Maintains 340B program integrity and inventory compliance when applicable.
  • Leadership and Personnel Development

  • Orients, trains, and evaluates new pharmacy personnel.
  • Provides leadership, coaching, and oversight of staff performance.
  • Serves as a communication liaison between pharmacy staff and leadership.
  • Assists the Director in promoting positive interdepartmental relationships.
  • Reviews and supports performance evaluations and corrective actions as delegated.
