Position Description

The Anoka County Public Health and Environmental Services (PHES) department an opening for an Assistant Director who will support leadership in implementing and directing department operations for the PHES department. The Assistant Director guides and controls the departmental activities of Anoka County’s Public Health and Environmental Services Department. This position collaborates to develop department strategic plans that align with county objectives and establishes departmental policies, practices, and procedures that have a significant impact on the county. The Assistant Director has overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending and implementing changes to methods and assumes the executive leadership role in the absence of the Department Director.  This position will increase the departments leadership capacity which is necessary to ensure the department meets foundational capabilities and is able to effectively serve our communities.

Emergency Preparedness is a core Public Health responsibility. As a Human Services employee, your roles and responsibilities include: participating in Public Health Emergency Preparedness training and exercises, responding to notifications and activation drills during business hours and periodically outside of business hours, and responding to Public Health emergencies and department responsibilities at the time of need (during business hours, outside of business hours, on weekends and holidays) in order to protect the health and well-being of our residents.

This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position.

Pay & Benefits

  • Salary: $111,113 to $155,500 ($53.42 to $74.76 per hour).

  • 2025 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 40: $111,113 to $155,500 ($53.42 to $74.76 per hour).

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Government Center, located at 2100 3rd Ave, Anoka, MN 55303.

  • This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work, with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.

  • Expected work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, direct, and provide leadership and oversight to the financial, administrative and operational functions of the department, including Public Health Nursing, Health Planning and Promotion, Environmental Services, and Recycling and Resource Solutions.

  • Monitor workload and performance to ensure department priorities are being met. Interview, select, hire, evaluate, train and supervise department employees.
