Cybersecurity Software Engineer

Job Summary:

Applies advanced subject matter expertise in cybersecurity and software engineering to design, develop, and maintain secure software systems and tools. Frequently contributes to the development of innovative security solutions and methods. Works on complex problems requiring deep analysis of software architecture, threat models, and system vulnerabilities. Leads and/or provides technical guidance to project teams and may participate in cross-functional initiatives. Acts as a technical authority in secure software development practices, influencing process improvements and policy establishment. Frequently represents the organization in technical engagements with external partners and clients. Exercises significant independent judgment within broadly defined policies and practices to determine optimal approaches for achieving security and engineering objectives. May mentor and guide junior engineers.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, and maintains secure software systems and tools to support HP’s cybersecurity infrastructure.
  • Integrates security into the software development lifecycle (SDLC), ensuring secure coding practices and threat modeling are applied throughout.
  • Develops custom software solutions, scripts, and automation tools to enhance threat detection, incident response, and vulnerability management.
  • Collaborates with cybersecurity analysts and engineers to translate threat intelligence and vulnerability data into actionable software solutions.
  • Conducts code reviews and security assessments of internally developed and third-party software.
  • Owns resolution of software-related security issues, including vulnerabilities, exploits, and misconfigurations.
  • Recommends and implements containment, eradication, and recovery measures for software-based threats.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of HP’s secure coding standards and software security policies.
  • Participates in the evaluation and integration of off-the-shelf security tools and platforms.
  • Maintains awareness of emerging threats, technologies, and best practices in secure software engineering.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Technical Cybersecurity Certification preferred (e.g., SANS, ISACA, (ISC)², CompTIA, Cisco, CERT).
  • Typically 6+ years of relevant experience in software engineering and cybersecurity.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of secure software development practices and principles.
  • Strong proficiency in programming and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Java, C/C++, PowerShell, JavaScript).
  • Experience with secure coding standards (e.g., OWASP, SEI CERT).
  • Familiarity with software vulnerability assessment tools and techniques.
  • Understanding of threat modeling, static and dynamic code analysis, and secure architecture design.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and integrating security into DevOps workflows.
  • Knowledge of network and application security concepts.
  • Experience with container security, cloud-native development, and microservices architecture is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.

The base pay range for this role is $104,800 to $158,250 annually with additional opportunities for pay in the form of bonus and/or equity (applies to US candidates only).  Pay varies by work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
