About the role

Summary

The Environmental Health and Safety Technician initiates safety and health inspections to identify and correct hazards that might be found in campus laboratories, clinical laboratories, research, graduate or undergraduate teaching laboratories, and work areas where chemicals, biologicals, radioactive materials, etc. are used and/or stored.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Initiates safety and health inspections to identify and correct hazards that might be found in campus laboratories, clinical laboratories, research, graduate or undergraduate teaching laboratories, and work areas where chemicals, biologicals, radioactive materials, etc. are used and/or stored.

  • Investigate and initiate corrective action(s) on complaints of unsafe working conditions in all affected work areas. 
  • Ensures all University employees and work areas comply with applicable regulations or related standards (e.g., EPA/RCRA, NJDEP, NJDOH, PEOSH, ANSI, ASHRAE, etc.)
  • Assists with tracking/identifying key metrics or identified high risks.
  • Ensures that safety materials are available, and protocols are followed in all campus laboratories, clinical laboratories, research, graduate or undergraduate teaching laboratories, and work areas where chemicals, biologicals, radioactive material, etc. are used and/or stored.
  • Ensures that hazardous and regulated medical waste generated on the West Campus are disposed of following Federal and State Regulations and may periodically assist at other campuses as needed.
  • Maintains accurate records of all hazardous waste manifests, waste profiles, and other regulatory documentation.
  • Manages clinical and laboratory waste removal requests and maintains an active inventory of laboratory waste generated on the West Campus and may periodically assist at other campuses as needed.
  • Works with waste vendors to schedule and coordinate timely disposal of hazardous waste. Audits vendor services to verify Federal and State regulatory compliance as well as to ensure cost-effective disposal methods and accurate invoicing.
  • Conducts periodic employee exposure monitoring.
  • Performs required weekly safety inspections of all Hazardous Waste Central Accumulation Areas (CAAs). 
  • Supports the maintenance of Rowan University EH&S training programs for all campus and clinical laboratories, research, graduate or undergraduate teaching laboratories, and work areas regarding OSHA/PEOSH or other applicable regulatory or university compliance.
  • Applies for and maintains Hazardous Waste permits as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Helps with coordination and documentation of inspections involving fume hoods, bio-safety hoods, emergency showers and eyewashes, and any other EH&S-related equipment (maintains associated documentation)
  • Works with the EH&S team to acquire annual chemical inventories for all University laboratories or research areas and teaching laboratories to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Provides EH&S consultation with campus laboratory, research, graduate or undergraduate teaching laboratories personnel and answers questions as needed.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the EH&S website. Creates and uploads website content in support of EH&S programs, policies, and initiatives.
  • Works with the EH&S team to develop Requests for Proposal (RFP) documents to obtain vendor contracts for services.
  • Assists Fire Safety where and when needed
  • Other EH&S duties as assigned or as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a related science, biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, safety, industrial hygiene, or closely related field. 

 Experience

  • Two (2) or more years required of work experience in one/more of the following (Higher Education preferred):
    1. Laboratory Safety
    2. Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) field
    3. Regulatory Inspections
    4. Hazardous Waste Management
    5. Regulated Medical Waste Management
  • Two (2) or more years’ work experience in a Veterinary Hospital or Veterinary Practice preferred.
  • 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) preferred.
  • Have demonstrated knowledge of OSHA/PEOSH regulations as they relate to laboratories, research, or higher education work.
  • Experience with or knowledge of hazardous waste materials and applicable regulations.
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner, involving multiple stakeholders, and provide oversight in the EH&S arena.
