Position Overview

The School of Music at The Ohio State University seeks to hire a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure-track Lecturer in Music Theory with an emphasis in aural training starting August 15, 2025, eligible for annual contract renewal upon satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of excellence teaching aural training at the undergraduate level, the ability to implement research-informed pedagogical methods, and ability to teach across a range of musical styles and time periods. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the development and oversight of an undergraduate aural training program at Ohio State and will mentor graduate student teachers in research-informed pedagogy.

The School of Music is seeking a collaborative colleague with exemplary communication skills, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the University. Performance Objectives

  • Develop, in collaboration with other theory faculty, an aural training curriculum that will meet the diverse needs of undergraduate music students at Ohio State.
  • Mentor graduate student instructors in research-informed pedagogy.
  • Teach upper-level undergraduate analysis or improvisation courses according to the needs of the music theory area and interests of the candidate.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: PhD in Music Theory or related field, ABD considered. Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching of aural training at the collegiate level. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to building a culturally diverse intellectual community in line with Ohio State’s Shared Values.

Desired: Experience in the curricular development of an aural training program and the mentorship of graduate student teachers. A background in improvisation.
