Job Description Summary

The Veterinary Dental Technician/Anesthesia Nurse is a position that encompasses working in the Ryan Dental Service as a team member, alongside board certified veterinary dentists, dental lecturers, dental residents, a certified veterinary nurse/veterinary dental technician specialist/registered dental hygienist/hygienists. This position involves working in many aspects of dentistry, including general dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, and prosthodontics. The veterinary dental/anesthesia nurse will perform duties in anesthesia, general nursing, research, teaching, and client communication.

Job Description

Job Duties:

  Duties will depend on surgical caseloads and department needs

  • Work closely with our dental hygienist/certified veterinary technician/veterinary technician specialist to ensure patients are receiving optimal care.
  • Participate in rounds with Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service on working clinical days.
  • Dental and oral surgical procedures: perform nerve blocks, obtain dental radiographs, perform periodontal charting, scale and root plane of teeth using power and hand instruments, polish teeth, prepare dental impressions, provide home care instructions and dental education to clients.
  • Dental assisting: set up/break down of surgery procedure room, assist in chairside dental surgical cases by providing instruments or materials needed for procedure.
  • General nursing: admission of dentistry surgical cases, pre-operative bloodwork, place IV catheters, begin pre-op fluids when needed, urine sample collection, cytology, deliver patient to holding area prior to surgery, client communication regarding surgical schedule, bloodwork, pre-anesthetic instructions.
