Job Description

A Senior Staff Scientist must demonstrate the capability to lead scientific and product development projects in a team setting. This individual is expected to manage a group of junior staff members by providing hands-on training on existing protocols, assigning specific tasks and reviewing task completion, preparing reports, and presenting results to the R&D Manager and executive team. The individual is expected to initiate and drive product and technology development projects in a matrix team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Independently perform complex research assignments in a laboratory with minimal direction.
• Demonstrate a cross functional approach to problem solving and apply technical expertise to resolve problems of significant scope and complexity.
• Exercise considerable latitude in initiating, determining, or changing the course of technical projects.
• Represent the organization at internal and external meetings as a technical expert on projects.
• Act as a research manager for collaborative projects with external customers.
• Supervise and train junior scientists and technical support staff.
• Develop, optimize, and validate infectious disease panels utilizing molecular techniques with an emphasis on multiplexing, including TEM-PCR, qPCR, dPCR, microarray hybridization, bead based hybridization and nucleic acid extraction.
• Originate new product/process concepts
• Utilize bioinformatics tools to analyze public data sets of genomic sequences of pathogenic organisms.
• Maintain and culture microorganisms as necessary using sterile microbiological techniques and standard precaution procedures in a BSL-2 laboratory.

• Prepare and publish scientific reports and manuscripts and present findings at scientific conferences.
• Participate in process troubleshooting and technical support for internal and external customers.
• Establish procedures and specifications for Research and Development, Quality Control, Production, and Clinical Laboratory teams.
• Write and maintain SOPs.
• Perform other duties and functions as directed by the R&D Manager.
• Participate in job specific training, competency assessment reviews, and performance evaluations.

Additional Requirements:

• This position may require working additional time beyond the assigned hours. 
• Adheres to the laboratory’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures, and documents all related activities.
• Complies with company health, safety, environmental, and compliance policies.

Qualifications

• PhD in Biology or Chemistry with 2 or more years of experience in research setting, Master’s degree with 6 or more years of relevant experience, or Bachelor’s degree with more than 10 years of relevant experience. Previous supervisory experience is a plus.
• Hands-on experience in biology techniques, such as molecular assay design and validation, PCR, nucleic acid preparation, ELISA development, NGS, etc.
• Working knowledge of molecular biology equipment and software platforms
