About the role

If you're reading this, you're probably the lone HRBP in your company that people refer to as "the 'really good' HR person." You've likely had the experience of being in a “partner” role where you knew how to help teams develop, but didn’t have true leadership support for your work. You've probably also thought to yourself, (um, maybe this week),"I WISH I could do things the right way here!!!" If you've yearned for a better way to bring your knowledge about people practices, advising expertise, and creativity to life in support of a growing tech startup, we feel you... and keep reading.

At Expel, we’re not afraid to do things differently. This extends to what we believe about our people. We care about crafting a phenomenal employee experience. We believe if we take care of our team, they’ll care for our customers, and the rest will work itself out.

Our People Partner role is no exception. This role isn’t your HR Generalist doing the work of yesteryear. This is a role that has a huge impact not just on one dedicated team, but across teams in and outside of Employee Experience (we call it EX). When you boil down the role, one mantra will guide your work rhythms: consult, inform, enable, repeat. You’ll partner with leaders across functions to coach them through some of their most complex people challenges. You’ll inform and enable their managers - coaching them through performance ups and downs - to help them be the best managers in the biz. You’ll put that analytical mind to use, quantifying the impact of your work in new and creative ways. And you'll also put those collaborating skills to work, leading EX work across teams that helps us scale our people practices as we keep growing.

Are you ready to help us grow our crew? If so, we'd love to hear from you.

What Expel can do for you

  • Connect you with peers that care deeply about helping fellow human beings develop into the best employees they can be
  • Give you the opportunity to try new things and work with a team that cares a lot about making Expel an amazing place to work
  • Provide you the freedom to shape and grow the People Partner function to be a responsive, trusted, supportive arm of EX for our leaders
  • Support you in growing your own career, especially if you want experience in a start-up environment

What you can do for Expel

  • Help us build an environment that is culture ++ (incrementally additive)
  • Bring your passions for organizational development and organizational change to bear in the way you advise leaders and managers on talent strategy
  • Work with our leaders to push their thinking about how they're growing and supporting their people
  • Think deeply about how we support employee relations work, finding ways to quantify our impact on our crew (and on our business!)
  • Lead cross functional EX projects that takes the stuff you learn from your work with managers and teams and puts them into scalable programs or processes

What you should bring with you

  • Experience as an HR Business partner...and some dissatisfaction with the status quo in HR
  • Coaching skills, and willingness to develop these skills in managers and peers too
  • Creative problem-solving techniques to address age-old problems instead of tried and tired "standard HR practices"
  • Data storytelling skills
  • A strong business sense, including understanding how work gets done across teams and why it’s being done in the first place
  • Strong active listening, conflict management, and conversational skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability to consistently set and meet expectations
  • A drive to be relentlessly relational, building trust with leaders, managers, and their crew

Education and Experience

  • 7+ years of professional experience in relevant roles as part of a HR/People team
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalently compelling series of life experiences
  • Familiarity with one or more core HRIS systems (preferably Workday), MS Office, and/or G-Suite
  • People management experience is preferred
  • Professional certification in Human Resources is helpful, but not required
  • Professional certification in Coaching (ICF certification or other) is also preferred, but not required
