About the Role

Wirecutter is seeking a senior staff writer to join the team that covers mattresses and sleep gear. 

As senior staff writer, your core responsibility will be maintaining and growing our catalogue of mattress reviews. You will also test and review other products related to sleep and health, such as weighted blankets, white noise machines, sleep- tracking apps, and alarm clocks. You will pitch and write service-oriented articles about sleep and other health topics. 

You do not need to have previous experience reviewing mattresses or writing about sleep. But you have an interest in sleep and health, experience reporting on health-related topics, and be dedicated to helping our readers navigate purchases and improve their lives through better sleep. 

Our work is research-driven and evidence-based. You will interview medical and industry experts, develop testing plans, and sort through marketing claims. You will stay on top of health and science news related to sleep, industry and product developments, trends, and evolving reader interest. 

You will work with our operations team to plan and execute testing in Wirecutter’s Long Island City office, and you will test mattresses and other sleep gear in your home. 

You will report to the senior editor and collaborate with the other staff writer on the sleep team. This role is based out of our office in Long Island City, New York.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, report, and write long form guides and short form posts about mattresses and sleep; think creatively about sources, identify experts, and conduct meaningful short- and long-term tests

  • Request product samples and process their return

  • Call experts and review academic journal articles and other scientific data; methodically scan user reviews and forums to find what matters to readers

  • Collaborate with editors to conceive new content and formats and move ideas from pitch to publish     

  • Collaborate with photo, video, and illustration departments to produce visuals to support guides and blog posts

  • Work with our community team to respond to reader feedback and questions; work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; work with our operations team on product orders and testing plans 

  • May be required to attend trade shows and product news events to build contacts and expertise in relevant topic areas

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Senior Editor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional writing experience

  • Excellent communication and task management skills; and the patience to work through multiple rounds of edits and projects and deadlines simultaneously
