Job Description:
Individuals will assist with recreational, educational, and interpretive activities; assist with preparation and organization of a variety of educational and interpretive programs within a recreational, natural, or cultural setting; assist with preparation of material for recreational and educational programs. Naturalist programs are offered to a range of audiences and may include activities outdoor skills (fishing, etc.), natural history (bird watching, insects, mammals, etc.), other sciences (amateur astronomy, geology, and paleontology), guide hikes, night programs, special events and more. In addition to educational programs, individuals will assist with housekeeping and maintenance of nature center facilities and daily animal care. Individuals will perform customer service activities, such as answering phones, taking payments and answering questions. Perform related work as required.
Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: At least three months experience working in a recreational area, scenic attraction, hospitality, historical, retail or customer service setting, agricultural setting, or related coursework/training.
Preferred Requirements: One year of experience working in a recreational area, scenic attraction or historical setting, or related coursework/training or experience. Prefer: experience or education in outdoor activities described above plus some teaching experience and/or experience developing educational programs. Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of education principles and practices, animal husbandry, the ability to present information to a variety of audiences, and ability to drive a vehicle for work purposes. Basic knowledge of and strong interest in topics described above. Excellent communication/teaching skills are needed for this position. Applicant must have a willingness to learn about the natural history of area parks and environments. Must have a strong desire to share this knowledge with the public through interpretive and educational programming.
