Operating Room Team Lead (RN) - Full-Time, Days

Join UChicago Medicine, as an Operating Room Team Leader  (Plastics) in the CCD-OR.

 

As an Operating Room Team Leader, you will be responsible for providing nursing care that is goal-directed and adapted to the needs of an individual, a family and/or community during health and illness. 

 

Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations. Responsible for providing guidance, clinical expertise, mentoring, and functional direction to members of the health care team while optimizing available resources to achieve optimal patient outcomes. This role may include, but is not limited to: surgical case management, perioperative patient care coordination, staff education and organization of quality /performance improvement activities. Supports the mission, vision and values of Perioperative Services and the organization.

 

Essential Job Functions

• Act as a clinical resource to advise the perioperative team in areas of specialty expertise using evidence-based knowledge and prevailing standards.
• Coordinates, facilitates, and manages change within the health care organization.
• Facilitates or serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative patient care.
• Uses effective conflict resolution techniques.
• Collects and analyzes data that applies to the specialty to facilitate collaboration and negotiation with stakeholders.
• Serves as a role model of professional behavior.
• Ensures that the appropriate equipment and supplies are available.
• Works with the team and ancillary services to keep the area clean and inspection ready.
• Helps ensure that staff members are in place at designated times and prepared to work.
• Works to achieve current perioperative goals for on time starts and room turnovers.
• Able to scrub and circulate all cases within a specialty.
• Actively participates in new procedures and for when new protocols are implemented-participates in generating protocols for these new specialty procedures.
• Along with Manager, modifies surgeon preference cards when needed for supplies and instruments.
• Works in conjunction with CSP to make sure all instrument trays are complete and in working order.
• Evaluates equipment for defects or need for repair and coordinates repair. Coordinates with scheduling office and supply chain the need for Vendor presence for upcoming cases.
• Attend departmental meetings as required.
• Support Magnet Certification
• Works collaboratively with charge nurse in assigning staff when necessary.

• Provides cost-effective care by evaluating and assessing the use of soft goods, maintaining preference cards, and keeping all equipment in good working order.
• Assists staff members in evaluating practice and in creating strategies for further improvement.
• Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders.
• Mentors team members within the specialty as required.Participates in interviews for staff selection.

• Meets regularly with the Manager to discuss problems or suggestions for improvements in procedures or patient through-put.
• Shares in professional leadership responsibilities related to patient care at various levels by directing and teaching other employees.
• Participates in a changing environment by being supportive and cooperative and assisting with activities in the unit.
• Demonstrates reliability and accountability to the unit.
• Contributes to creating a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation and commitment for all who participate in the care of patients.

• Provide educational resources and coordinate with the perioperative educator regarding perioperative team education specific to the specialty.
• Uses clinical pathways and/or plans of care incorporating standards of practice.
• Participates in research activities within unit.
• Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement process: assists in determining issues to be examined, participates in data collection and analysis, assists in implementing changes.
• Attends conferences pertaining to specialty.
• Supports staff education, annual competency testing, and encourages specialty certification.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an NLN accredited school of nursing
• Current Registered Nurse licensure in Illinois
• Basic Life Support certification
• CNOR Certified or currently work
