Position Function: The Staff Accountant reports to the Controller and is primarily responsible for supporting day-to-day finance operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, account reconciliations. The finance team operates in a cross-functional team environment with an emphasis on cross-training providing exposure to multiple finance department functions for each team member.
Position Duties and Responsibilities: The Staff Accountant is responsible for the following duties:
- Accounts Payable (A/P): Monitor entry of payment requests accurately and timely in MS Dynamics 365 Business Central, our paperless A/P and accounting system. Serve as backup for entry of A/P requests. Extract approved items as data files, prepare files for transmission to bank for payment, and review open items. Process payment runs twice a week.
- Accounts Receivable (A/R): Manage accounts receivable for funds received and new pledges made.
- Revenue Recognition: Review new agreements for conditions or restrictions and book appropriately.
- Restricted Funds: Record month-end entries to capture administrative fee from temporary restricted funds. Prepare quarterly roll-forward of fund balances for temporary restricted funds and internally designated funds.
- Charitable Registrations: Monitor charitable registrations for all states. Annually work with a third-party vendor on processing the registrations in all required states.
- Reporting: Support Controller with providing monthly, quarterly, and special request reports both internally and externally.
- Month-End Financial Statements: Assist Controller in closing the month and producing accurate and timely Financial Statements. Prepare journal entries related to month end close and adjustments needed from posted transactions.
- Audit: Provide auditor requested information timely and accurately.
- Support: Participate in cross-training to help provide general accounting support to NFF finance staff. These related tasks include but are not limited to payroll support, accounting for contributions and other receivable such as reimbursable grants.
Location: The location for this position can be flexible throughout the US. This position is a remote/work-from-home position, and requires reliable internet access and a dedicated workspace.
Compensation: The NFF offers competitive compensation and benefits and has recently implemented a new compensation program as part of our commitment to transparency. The salary range for this position will be in the $56,000 to $70,200 range and may be eligible for locality adjustment. Please note that the indicated salary range describes the full range for an incumbent in this position, new staff will generally start near the base end of the range NFF is committed to internal salary equity.

Education and Qualifications: NFF expects the Staff Accountant to possess the following educational and experience qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree, or 10-plus years’ accounting experience encompassing each of the functional position duties, and proven experience with a business-class accounting system required.
- At least 3 to 5 years’ experience working in an accounting position preferred. Nonprofit fund accounting experience a plus, but not required.
- Working knowledge of GAAP.
- Proficient, working knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook.
