Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Program Director for the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship, with full accountability for program administration, accreditation compliance, and adherence to all applicable regulatory and institutional requirements.
  • Lead competency-based curriculum development, implementation, and continuous evaluation for Hematology/Oncology fellowship education.  
  • Direct the recruitment and selection of applicants via ERAS and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) Specialties Matching Services (SMS).
  • Provide instruction and mentorship to medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, and faculty across clinical and academic settings.
  • Conduct semi-annual performance evaluations and chair the Clinical Competency Committee.
  • Conduct, support, and promote research and scholarly activity within the division.
  • Oversee and continuously assess the fellowship learning environment to ensure excellence in education, professionalism, and patient care.
  • Oversee individualized training pathways such as dedicated research or clinical tracks in specific organ systems. 
  • Ensure fellows gain proficiency in specialty complex procedures and administration of novel systemic therapies.
  • Monitor fellow well-being and implement fatigue mitigation and wellness programs. 
  • Ensure collaboration and regulatory compliance between The Queen’s Health System and Hawaii Pacific Health to support high-quality, compliant medical education of hematology/medical oncology fellows.
  • Liaise with the University of Hawaii Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC).
  • Perform additional academic, clinical, and scholarly responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (MQ's):

Associate Professor MQ’s:

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Maintaining board certification in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology through the American Board of Internal Medicine. 
  • Valid Hawaii Medical license by date of hire.
  • Four years in the rank of Assistant Professor, or four years of other health care experience, or a total of four years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other experience, or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another health care school of recognized standing.
  • Proven ability in teaching, research, and program administration. 
  • Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the clinical specialty. 
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Evidence of excellent patient care in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience functioning in a complex system of multiple organizations and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with LCME and ACGME requirements.

Full Professor MQ's:

  • Same as Associate Professor plus:
  • Four years in the rank of Associate Professor, or ten years of other health care experience, or a total of ten years of teaching in the rank of Associate Professor and other health care experience, or one year in the rank of Professor at another health care school of recognized standing.
