Title:  Sailing Instructor (S)                                                                          Level:  3507 

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: 

Under supervision, facilitates sail training of Chicago Park District sailing programs, sailing teams, sailing club members and volunteers. Performs related duties as required 

EXAMPLES OF DUTES: 

  • Provides instruction and training to participants that may include special needs students, in the sport of sailing and other water safety techniques by implementing Sailing Center course curriculum.  
  • Attends and assists in running Sailing Center events, regattas, races, and clinics as needed.  
  • Assists in repairs, maintenance, program recordkeeping and updating senior sailing staff regarding class participants’ progress and any facility issues.  
  • Adapts programs to reflect different levels of participant skill development and physical ability.  
  • Enforces and promotes Sailing Center safety guidelines.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Training and Experience: 

Enrollment in a college or university supplemented by one to two years of sailing instruction or coaching experience; in addition, one year of experience working with individuals with disabilities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. 

Certification Requirements: 

Valid CPR certification from the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized organization.  

Applicants must have one or more of the following certifications at the time of hire or be able to achieve before classes begin: 

              US SAILING Level 1 Small Boat Certification  

              US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification 

              USGA Captain’s License with Sailing Endorsement 

Preferred Certification:  

Therapeutic Recreation Assistant or Specialist (National Council for Therapeutic Certification), Adapted Aquatics Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, Special Olympics Sport Coach (various). 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Good knowledge of sailing techniques, rigging, tuning, physics of sailing and navigation rules. Knowledge of games, activities and drills used on the water to facilitate learning of sport specific skills. Effective oral communications skills. Ability to enforce safety rules. Ability to exercise good and safe judgment. Ability to work with individual adults or groups of individuals, children or groups of children and those with physical disabilities.
