SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Sterile Processing Coordinator supervises the staff and operations supporting the reprocessing of reusable instruments and equipment in the Central Service departments of St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph Health Centers. Responsible for overseeing the cleaning, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of reusables. Directs the completion of the OR case carts. Coordinates staff education and training related to sterile processing procedures; Maintains appropriate Infection Control and JCAHO/AOA standards in work area; Works under the direction of the Central Service Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
· High School Diploma required.
· Bachelor degree preferred.
· Must possess CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certificate.
· Must have prior Central Service or Surgery experience.
· Prior supervisory experience preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
· Minimum of three (3) years working experience in a Central Service or OR setting.
· Prefer one (1) year of previous supervisory experience.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
· Must routinely gather, organize and analyze data in management of inventory and staffing levels.
PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING:
Must be able to adapt procedures to new or changed conditions. Must use a proactive decision making approach. Consultation with co-workers/team members is critical to overall coordination of materiel management department.
SCOPE OF IMPACT/ACCOUNTABILITY:
Responsible for operations of multiple work areas at both St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph Health Centers. Service areas can have significant financial and/or clinical impact on Health Center.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION:
Position requires staff supervision and delegation skills. Extensive contact with users is necessary and coordinator is required to use considerable tact and listening skills to achieve results.
PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Provides daily supervision of CS processing technicians:
a. Develops work schedules and duty assignments
b. Conducts timely performance appraisals
c. Models supportive behaviors
d. Monitors fte productivity and adjusts staffing based on activity levels.
e. Prioritizes work activities.
2. Coordinate continuing in-service education and assist certified technicians in maintaining credentials:
a. Assists department manager in identifying areas that require technician education.
b. Performs in-services based on identified needs and maintains accurate records of employee
in-service participation.
c. Assists in the orientation of new departmental employees with emphasis on instrument
processing procedures.
d. Updates employees regarding changes.
e. Works effectively with nursing personnel and physicians to set up new trays, revise trays,
implement new procedures and provide timely information.
3. Develops and establishes operating policies consistent with overall policies and objectives and ensures their adequate execution. Appraises and evaluates the results of overall operations regularly and systematically and periodically reports these results to the Manager of Central Service.
Assures the maintenance of adequate stock on hand.
a. Monitors inventory levels to maintain targeted turnover rates and customer fill-rates.
b. Coordinates with the purchasing and distribution departments for replenishment of needed items.
