GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The School Psychologist is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating children with a variety of mental, emotional, social, behavioral, cognitive, and trauma related conditions. Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, collaborate with families and staff, and advocate for inclusive practices that support the developmental needs of all children.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure the provision of comprehensive services to children with mental, emotional, social, behavioral, cognitive, and trauma related conditions.
- Assess psychological, intellectual, cognitive, social, and behavioral issues with testing and evaluation that include:
- Developmental and learning differences, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, and communication disorders
- Disruptive behavior disorders including conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder
- Grief, loss, and trauma related disorders
3. Provide direct intervention services such as behavior therapy, play therapy, child-parent therapy, child anger management therapy, child trauma therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), etc.
4. Develop Individualized Family Support Plans (IFSP) and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), as needed and ongoing support.
5. Foster a collaborative team environment that promotes effective communication and teamwork among the Child Disabilities, Child Mental Health, and Behavior Intervention staff and other departmental Head Start personnel.
6. Support the Specialists as they collaborate and meet with families to understand and address the unique needs of children with disabilities and special needs, ensuring their active participation in the program.
7. Attend staffing meetings as needed/requested.
8. Participate in case management meetings as required.
9. Assist in the development and establish partnerships with community organizations, agencies, schools, and professionals to enhance services and resources available to children and families.
10. Monitor and ensure the maintenance of accurate records, progress, and documentation ensuring compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, IDEA, and other relevant regulations.
11. Support the development and implementation of policies and procedures in compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards and state and federal regulations.
12. Provide support on the recruitment strategies that promote enrollment of children with disabilities.
13. Provide recommendations for improvement for program effectiveness and school readiness outcomes related to children with disabilities and special needs.
14. Provide support and assistance in the identification of children with special needs and develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with the IEP team.
15. Collaborate with educators, parents, and administrators to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
16. Provide recommendations on the process for conducting comprehensive evaluations to assess child’s cognitive, academic, social, and emotional functioning and provide support as requested.
17. Provide support as needed to Interpret assessment results and provide recommendations/referrals for medical, educational interventions and accommodations.
18. Serve as a resource and liaison between ECS and the public schools and community to provide services to children with identified disabilities and to secure contracts with LEA’s.
19. Monitor activities and/or strategies to support successful transitions of children with disabilities to and from Head Start/Early Head Start.
