Position Specific Description

As a Staff Data Scientist at NextEra Energy, you will play a pivotal role in analyzing large and complex data sets to extract valuable insights and drive data-driven decision-making. Your specialized skills in nodal analysis, artificial lift optimization, and production optimization will be critical in developing strategies to enhance the efficiency of our energy production processes. You would also be utilizing petroleum engineering and real-time analytics to facilitate acute evaluations and prompt decision-making. This role requires a sound background in statistics, machine learning, and data analysis, coupled with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in developing innovative data-science solutions to drive operational excellence.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Contribute to the formation and implementation of data-driven strategies across various business units.
  • Analyze extensive and complex data sets using statistical modeling techniques, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization tools.
  • Create and maintain scalable and efficient data pipelines for data cleansing, transformation, and analysis.
  • Develop predictive models and algorithms to supplement business planning, forecasting, and optimization processes.
  • Incorporate nodal analysis methods into data science projects for more nuanced understanding of oil and gas wells to make strategic recommendations.
  • Apply artificial lift optimization methods to improve production efficiency.  
  • Utilize production optimization techniques such as decline curve analysis, rate transient analysis, and production forecasting to identify and implement improvements in production performance.
  • Use geostatistics to analyze spatially correlated data, enhancing geological evaluations and decisions.
  • Monitor and analyze real-time data streams (SCADA/Historian) to identify anomalies and provide real-time insights to optimize operational efficiency and equipment performance.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams of drilling and completions, reservoir, and production engineers to identify business challenges and opportunities that can be addressed using data science methodologies.
  • Communicate findings and insights to stakeholders in a clear and compelling manner, both verbally and through data visualizations.
  • Maintain currency with the recent advancements in data science and machine learning techniques and effectively apply them to solve business challenges.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior data scientists, delivering technical advice and expertise within the oil and gas industry.  

 

Preferred Qualifications: 
•    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Petroleum Engineering, or a related field; Master's or Ph.D. preferred
•    Proven experience in leveraging statistics, machine learning, and data analysis within the Oil and Gas industry
•    Experience working with various data sets in the Oil and Gas sector, such as well logs, production data, seismic data, and petrophysical data
•    Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java for data manipulation, modeling, and analysis
•    Strong knowledge of machine learning techniques and algorithms specific to reservoir engineering, production optimization, drilling operations, and asset maintenance
•    Familiarity with industry-specific tools and technologies, such as Petrel, Eclipse, Spotfire, PowerTools, or equivalent
•    Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain data pipelines for Oil and Gas data, ensuring data integrity and accessibility for analysis
•    Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work with large, complex data sets and industry-specific challenges
•    Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively translate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders within the Oil and Gas industry
•    Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment specific to the Oil and Gas sector
