How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

Pediatric experience strongly preferred.

The Mental Health Therapist provides assessment, short-term counseling, ongoing counseling, referral and follow-up service to children and families.

Our Mental Health Therapists are given the opportunity to develop a range of interventions and provided support to develop clinical skills.

Our team currently provides CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), PCIT (Parent Child Interaction Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy), Neuro Divergent treatment such as social thinking curriculum and gaming groups.

This position will work in the Carilion Pediatric Behavioral Health Clinic at Carilion Tanglewood in Roanoke, Virginia.

Weekdays: Flexibility in schedule available.

The Mental Health Therapist provides assessment, short-term counseling, ongoing counseling, referral and follow-up service to children and families.

The responsibilities of the Mental Health Therapist include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides psychotherapy to children and families.
  • Provides initial evaluations, and short-term and long-term treatment, and the option to provide group therapy based on patient needs.
  • Conducts diagnostic psycho-social evaluations.
  • Maintains accurate and descriptive records on patients receiving services using electronic medical records.
  • Works collaboratively and develops relationships with care teams, physicians and professionals as appropriate to ensure that patient treatment is consistent with their condition and treatment requirements.

No supervisory responsibilities or duties. Requires close communication with counselors, clinical staff, community agencies, employers, and treatment facilities. Accesses, enters and/or updates confidential information. Appropriately shares and makes decisions based on this information as a regular responsibility of the job. Provides input into budget and cost containment initiatives.  Work is generally performed in an office environment and involves sitting, standing or walking.  Light effort is required to carry boxes, office supplies or use light tools.  May be exposed to infectious diseases, bio-hazardous materials and combative patients. Varied and complex work is performed under general guidance in patient care environment and is often fast-paced, requiring use of prioritization skills.  Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development.  Must provide own transportation and may be required to travel to other Carilion work sites to meet staffing needs.

What We Require:

Education: Master's Degree in Behavioral Sciences from an accredited university required.

Experience: Two years - Five years of experience in the mental health profession preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP). ** Opportunity to become PCIT (Parent Child Interaction Therapy) certified **

Other: Part of interdisciplinary C/L Team. Interfaces with patients on medical floors and ED. Provides assessment, triage counseling. Facilitate admissions or outpatient referrals.
