Position Summary
Under direction, reviews and processes clinical research charges that are routed to the Research Billing Review report in Epic. Reviews charges to ensure each charge is appropriately designated for payment in accordance with the Coverage Analysis. Collaborates with departments and study teams to clarify discrepancies as necessary. Works with Physician’s Billing (PB) and Hospital Billing (HB) team to provide context on escalated charges.
Job Responsibilities
- Reviews charges for active participants on clinical research studies in accordance with the coverage analysis, protocol and budget, as appropriate. Assigns billing designation to each charge to ensure appropriate payment routing and processing.
- Works closely with assigned departments and study teams to resolve issues related to charge routing, linking and payment.
- Assists with the development and implementation of strategies and procedures that will reduce review timelines and promote faster processing.
- Performs extensive follow-up to investigate charge discrepancies and trends. Liaises with PB and HB teams to reconcile issues with research charges and facilitate processing.
- Monitors the Research Billing Report and workqueue to ensure charges are reconciled to meet timely filing deadlines.
- Monitors research charge patterns and alerts manager to deviations.
- Serves as point of contact to assist departments, study teams and participants with reconciling claims that were incorrectly billed.
- Provides education and training to study teams, as needed, on clinical research billing processes, study team responsibilities and study account payment procedures.
- Assists in training current and new employees on the use of systems and departmental policies and procedures.
- Works with supervisor to create clinical research charge reports for dissemination to study teams.
- Attends workshops and seminars to keeps abreast of billing policies and procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education
- High School Diploma
Experience
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Approximately 3 years of medical billing, specifically accounts receivable experience.
Proficient in working within an EMR.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology. Demonstrated knowledge of third party reimbursement.
- Demonstrated ability to function independently and exercise independent judgment.
- Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to interact with multiple constituencies and exercise "people skills".
- Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and database applications.
