Position Summary

This position is specific to the Harris Nuclear Plant (HNP), located in New Hill, North Carolina. HNP is a single unit, Westinghouse Pressurized Water Reactor with a rated thermal power of 2948 MWth.

The Design Support engineering team manages the development, design, and implementation of engineering changes.  This position is for an electrical / I&C design engineer.  This position requires high individual motivation to solve complex analytical problems and plant issues.  Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with increasing independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct support to plant operations and maintenance, primarily in the form of design changes, engineering calculations, and technical recommendations for improvement of the plant electrical and I&C systems
  • Supports assigned engineering changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering related studies.
  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces.
  • Displays increasing competency to troubleshoot, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Participates in technical training activities such as formal engineering mentoring and group specific training classes.

Basic / Required Qualifications

Nuc Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience.

Sr Nuc Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, OR 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.  
  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations. 
  •  Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Professional Engineer license
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Knowledge/Experience in the areas of Instrumentation & Control Systems, Electrical Power Systems, Digital Process Systems including but not limited to:
  • Directly involved in troubleshooting on Electrical/I&C issues supporting continued plant operation.
  • Performs a variety of tasks for development and implementation of electrical changes to the plant.  These range from ensuring proper coordination and protection when replacing motors and/or breakers.  Calculation impacts and updates are part of the scope.
