Summary

This position is responsible for performs a variety of professional, analytical, and technical work involving crime analysis.

  • Analyzes, prepares and disseminates analytical data and other information relevant to crime series, trends, patterns and suspect information to enhance proactive and reactive law enforcement capabilities.
  • Performs geographical mapping analyses relevant to crime, trends, patterns and perpetrators.
  • Works with the Investigation, Uniform and Administrative Operations divisions to identify, evaluate, and report upon major crime trends, crime patterns, and criminals in order to analyze relevant data and produce crime bulletins, crime patterns and suspect intelligence information.
  • Identifies crime patterns utilizing daily case review.
  • Advises appropriate personnel of crime patterns and anticipated criminal activity.
  • Assists operational and administrative personnel in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention and suppression of criminal activities, aiding the investigative process and increasing apprehensions and the clearance of cases.
  • Coordinates analysis activities with other City departments and outside agencies.
  • Responds to requests regarding crime analysis information relating to specific investigations.
  • Prepares and distributes reports, charts, publications and related material to track, display and explain findings and report on crime analysis activities.
  • Performs a variety of complex professional analyses, including geographical mapping analyses, of relative crime information.
  • Collects, analyzes, prepares and disseminates information relative to crime patterns and criminal intelligence to assist operational personnel in the police department.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Examples of duties

  • Knowledge of both the state of Georgia and the City of Columbus, Georgia laws.
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) concepts and function.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Windows, Excel and Word or similar software.
  • Skill in operating standard office equipment.
  • Skill in problem solving, decision making, and making recommendations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Public or Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Information Management or related field is required. Understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the department in order to direct and coordinate work within the department. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Supplemental information

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Pushing – use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word
  • Talking 2 – shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
