Under the general supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, the Lead Phlebotomy Tech provides leadership, training and daily supervision of the staff to ensure the team functions as a cohesive unit. Provides support to the Phlebotomy Supervisor and staff on special projects. Assists in developing and updating SOP’s as well as training all staff on changes in SOP's. In the absence of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, assumes charge responsibility as appropriate including taking on- call roll. Performs blood collection procedures. Ensures the safety of the patient and the safety of the blood collected.

 

Compensation Pay Range:

$21.46 - $28.89

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1 - Performs all duties of a phlebotomist and Phlebotomy Specialist. Performs all duties and tasks related to phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick and heelstick) using correct technique and with minimal discomfort to the patient according to established procedure of South Shore Hospital.
a.    Organizes floor assignments, print weekly schedules and able to re-assign phlebotomists based on staffing need and patient flow.
b.    Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes. Accurately and legibly records results of all procedures performed.
c.    Determines priority of STAT draws to ensure orderly workflow. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing.
d.    Informs supervisor of problems in obtaining specimens for any reason.
e.    Maintains complete confidentiality of patient information and records.
 
2 - Coordinates training/trains all staff in all areas; participates in the development of training tools.

3 - Assesses trainee performance and competencies and provides phlebotomy supervisor with trainee evaluations on a regular basis.
  
4 - Approves training completion and provides phlebotomy supervisor with completed training packet.
   
5 – Assists supervisor in maintaining staff competency records

6 - Assesses phlebotomy staff's skills through direct observation, testing and demonstration.

7 - In conjunction with phlebotomy supervisor, performs competency reviews as assigned by phlebotomy supervisor.

8 - Communicates any staff re-training needs to the phlebotomy supervisor along with a re-training plan.

9 - In conjunction with the phlebotomy supervisor, follows up with staff regarding errors, non-compliance and/complaints and provides the necessary coaching and/or re-training or other action.

10 - Assists as needed with ensuring that all staff are up to date in completing departmental/hospital trainings.

11 - In conjunction with phlebotomy supervisor, coordinates schedule and/or revises daily staff assignments.

12. Provides staff with open scheduling needs.

13 - Assists in ordering of supplies and equipment.

14 - Regularly works in all areas to maintain competency, skills and relations with staff and to assist with busy operations or to replace staff on short notice when needed.

15 - Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills through various means such as webinars, internal or external trainings, seminars, etc. 

16. Provides monthly QM data for supervisor

17. Assists with CAP preparation and inspection

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education - Preferred

High school diploma or equivalent

Some college or Associate’s degree preferred

Minimum Work Experience - Preferred

5 years previous work in phlebotomy procedures

May consider 3 years if experience is at SSH

Certifications/Licenses

Phlebotomy certification is preferred

Required additional Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to assist in supervisory functions in the absence of the Supervisor
  • Ability to oversee the day-to-day activities and provide guidance to staff including staff in training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in blood collections and the ability to teach those skills to adult learners.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment and serve as resource for staff.
  • Possess an understanding of and respect for following SOP's and industry requirements and
