Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. Virginia Department of Health is seeking an experienced Medical Officer for CHS. The CHS Medical Officer provides strategic medical leadership and serves as an expert medical and clinical consultant for assigned (Non-Medical) District Health Directors. In collaboration with the District Health Director, supports medical, clinical, and other public health services in the health district. Utilizes an interdisciplinary staff with efforts directed toward community assessment and health education, program design, program evaluation, resource allocation, quality of patient care, and inter-agency organization of health-related activities. Serves as a community resource on communicable disease issues and health risk reduction. Executes prescribing duties, consults on clinical matters, and carries out all other State Health Commissioner delegated statutory authority requiring a physician in accordance with the Code of Virginia. May provide direct care in a clinic environment through examination, diagnosis, and treatment. Must be licensed in Virginia to practice medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid licensure by the Virginia Board of Medicine
• Considerable knowledge and experience with administrative and operational practices and principles in support of public health and clinical medicine
• Considerable knowledge and experience in administering public health programs
• Experience providing preventative care and consultative services for infectious diseases
• Experience with providing strategic planning and leadership for public health programs and initiatives
• Experience in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs/systems
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships, foster teamwork, and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with clinical and non-clinical staff, state executives, local governments, community partners, and the general public

Additional Considerations

• Board certification in preventive medicine or other relevant specialty
• Considerable experience working with local, state, or federal government officials
• Extensive work experience in a public health organization
