Pay Range

$39.98 - $49.65 Hourly for the 533.2 level

$47.93 - $59.49 Hourly for the 533.3 level

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Mechanical Technologist/Sr. Mechanical Technologists. Use your talents to provide support for LLNL’s world recognized Render Safe Operations, nuclear emergency preparedness and response activities. In this role, you will provide technical mechanical support for custom sponsor training aids, prototype equipment, experimental research, installation of complex devices, and development projects. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate. These positions will include the opportunity for overtime to meet fast-paced customer delivery requirements. There are opportunities to travel and field the many custom training aids at offsite locations.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

In this role, you will 

  • Design, fabricate and assemble moderately complex mechanical systems/equipment using design and mechanical system functions.
  • Machine components using conventional lathe, mill and other manufacturing process machines.
  • Provide general technical support to various programmatic tasks in collaboration with scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Incorporate fundamental knowledge of 3D CAD modeling and design concepts using SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Incorporate office and scientific programs on computer systems to produce supportive documentation and graphics for drafting and design.
  • Apply fundamental knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of moderately complex mechanical problems.
  • Work scheduled as well as unscheduled overtime.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed for mechanical and customer support and interaction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 533.3 level

  • Provide advanced mechanical or electro-mechanical design and drafting support where overall design parameters and specifications have been established.
  • Contribute to preliminary design concepts for hardware, componentry, and systems including making independent judgment and decisions.
  • Participate and contribute strategically as a part of a highly motivated team.
  • Report to program coordinator and managers, engineers, and high-level personnel to provide technical updates to various programmatic tasks with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or an active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Associate's degree in mechanical, industrial, manufacturing or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Intermediate skills and understanding of fabrication, machine tool technology and operation of conventional machine tools and inspection techniques.
  • Intermediate technical skills and fundamental knowledge of engineering principles to solve moderately complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
  • Experience designing moderately complex mechanical components or systems.
  • Ability to complete and maintain materials handling, and crane operator, certifications and others required once in this position.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. in a safe and controlled manner.
