About the role

Patreon is the best place for creators to fire up their fandoms, share exclusive work, and turn their passions into lasting creative businesses. Over 250,000 podcasters, writers, musicians, artists, and other creative people use Patreon to reach their biggest fans directly and earn an income for the value they provide. Creators can offer paid memberships that unlock access to exclusive work and community, or sell individual digital items from their own Patreon shops.

Ultimately, our goal is simple: fund the creative class. And we’re leaders in that space, having sent over $3.5 billion to creators since our founding. We’re continuing to invest heavily in building the best creator tools with the best team in the creator economy, and are looking for a Intel & Investigations Manager to support our mission.

This role is available to those wishing to work in our San Francisco and New York offices on a hybrid work model or those wishing to be remote in the United States.

About the Role

As Trust and Safety’s Intel & Investigations Manager, you will build Patreon’s first-ever Intel & Investigations team. You will be responsible for detecting malicious uses of our platform (such as off-platform abuse actors) and disrupting their activities. This will require expert understanding of our products and data, and experience investigating threat actors on and off-platform. You will also respond to critical incidents, especially those that are not caught by our existing safety systems.

The ideal candidate will have a multidisciplinary investigative and analytical background and the ability to identify risks and make risk-based recommendations. It is highly important that candidates are focused on results and are self-starters. This role may periodically require candidates to work weekends or after hours during select high priority events.

  • Build a specialized Intel & Investigation team to support your investigative work, setting goals and benchmarks to measure team efficacy while identifying gaps and developing and implementing solutions

  • Identify emerging on and off-platform abuse or risk trends and forecast new forms of abuse

  • Detect and mitigate sophisticated actors, techniques, and procedures against Patreon products

  • Conduct multiple complex investigations to identify the sources and methods of abuse actors and share findings with operational and cross-functional partners

  • Act as a subject matter expert on the latest off-platform trends and its manifestations on online platforms in order to continually refine detection and mitigation strategies

  • Maintain a strong understanding of attacker tools, tactics, procedures and methodologies used to hunt for adversarial activity

  • Automate tracking and discovery of threats, leveraging internal and external data sources

  • Source, plan and lead in-depth campaign-style red team operations testing response capabilities

  • Coach junior threat and investigations analysts the fundamentals of intelligence analysis, network investigations, signal analysis and detection

  • Deliver technical training, advisory, and mentorship on complex Intel & Investigations topics in an operational environment

  • Work with sensitive content or situations and possibly graphic, controversial, or upsetting topics or content

About You

  • Leadership: Experience leading and training high-performing teams comprised of individual contributors. Track record of attracting, developing, and retaining top talent. Proven ability to drive meaningful change through collaboration, influence, and leadership, with or without formal authority.

  • Intel & Investigation: Experience with OSINT, pattern, network and behavioral analysis, or root cause analysis methodologies. Experience tracking threat actors of off-platform abuse operations. Experience in a related discipline such as red teaming, penetration testing, vulnerability research, account integrity and content safety abuse research.

  • Trust & Safety: Track record of driving results in UGC or community platform across a range of complex issues such as child safety, adult content, hate speech, harassment, violent extremism, and misinformation.
