General Function
The Assistant Dance Teacher provides support to the Lead Dance Instructor in ensuring classes are safe, fun, and engaging for all participants. This entry-level role is designed for individuals with a passion for dance and working with children who are looking to gain experience in instruction within a supportive YMCA setting. The Assistant Dance Teacher helps create a welcoming environment where kids can explore movement, build confidence, and enjoy the benefits of dance, while modeling the YMCA’s mission of strengthening healthy minds, bodies, and spirits.
Hours:
Evenings from about 4:00 PM - 6:45 PM
Saturday Mornings: 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM

Age Range: Toddlers to Young School Aged Children (5/6)
Responsibilities
- Assist the Lead Dance Instructor with class set-up, demonstrations, and supervision of participants.
- Provide one-on-one support and encouragement to children during activities.
- Help reinforce skills and instructions provided by the Lead Instructor.
- Maintain a positive and supportive atmosphere that promotes creativity, teamwork, and self-expression.
- Ensure participant safety by monitoring behavior and assisting with safe use of the dance space.
- Communicate with parents in a friendly and professional manner when needed, deferring program-related questions to the Lead Instructor.
- Step in to assist or lead warm-ups, games, or small groups under the direction of the Lead Instructor.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Dance experience (school, studio, or community-based) with interest in sharing skills with children.
- Previous experience working with children (babysitting, camp counseling, volunteering, etc.) preferred but not required.
- Enthusiastic, reliable, and eager to learn from the Lead Instructor.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Minimum age: 16 years.
