We are seeking a Senior Advisor, Johns Hopkins Facilities who will report to the Vice President for Facilities and is a key member of the leadership team responsible for providing comprehensive, strategic support for the various projects and operations of the function.
Johns Hopkins Facilities works collaboratively across the University to support high-level strategic master planning, capital investments, and other initiatives or, special projects of interest to senior University leadership, as well as the execution of operations in design and construction, planning and architecture, energy and utilities, grounds, maintenance, custodial services, sustainability, and transportation —all of which must further the university mission or education, research and clinical care.
The role supports the Vice President Johns Hopkins Facilities in leading the operations and working in close consultation and collaboration with University Administration, Divisional leadership, Directors and a variety of offices across the university. They act as a key adviser to the Vice President.
The position incumbent(s) will manage a portfolio of strategic initiative projects and work with other members of the Johns Hopkins Facilities leadership to integrate these initiatives into efforts for the entire University. S/he will work seamlessly with other members of the Johns Hopkins Facilities team and other university leaders and stakeholders.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Facilities Operations
- Identify and brief Vice President on key issues requiring special knowledge and understanding of programs, initiatives, goals and objectives beyond day-to-day operational knowledge.
- Oversee Capital Planning team in the development of five-year capital plans, project briefs for senior university leadership, the Capital Subcommittee, and various other formal and informal trustee engagements. Coordinate extensively with the Board of Trustee office, University Budget Office, and divisional business offices for capital project planning, presentations, and updates.
- Ensures matters requiring the VPJHF’s attention are developed, researched and evaluated thoroughly before presentation.
- Serve as the information conduit to the VPJHF, providing critical information and updates on matters of significance in a timely and expeditious manner. Reviews and/ or develops correspondence, communications, reports and presentations submitted to or presented by the VPJHF; obtains additional information and/or recommends appropriate changes to facilitate future discussions.
- Conduct and/or research activities in support of planning and decision making such as benchmarking initiatives with peer institutions, including research of best practices.
- Exercise independent discretion and judgment and assume full responsibilities for resolving issues and problems of material importance.
- Manage operations of the VPJHF office and supervise the Executive Assistant, Communications Specialist, and up to two Capital planning staff.
- Under the VPJHF’s direction, develop and support a culture of continuous quality-improvement, shared efficiencies and professionalism within Facilities.
Project Management
- Independently manage critical, timely and important short-term and long-term special projects on behalf of the Vice President of Johns Hopkins Facilities. Collaborates as required with other team members, including writing reports, developing plans, defining and communicating alternatives and making recommendations regarding appropriate courses of action based on thorough understanding of desired outcomes, expectations and timelines.
- Assume responsibility for keeping broad Facilities initiatives on-track and completed on a timely basis. This includes working directly with university administration as well as Schools and Directors to obtain and track pertinent and oftentimes confidential information.
- Tracks and assesses progress toward goals/priorities and takes appropriate action to influence outcomes.
Represent Johns Hopkins Facilities
- Builds and stays in close working relationship and coordination with a wide range of offices and staff, internal or external to the University.
- Independently represent the Vice President and the needs of Facilities at internal and external meetings
- Interact with members of the university administration and leadership of the JHU Schools on matters of importance to the Vice President on his/her behalf or in his/her absence.
