Overview

The Assistant Director-Residential is responsible for overseeing and managing the review process for residential construction plans to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role involves leading a team of plan reviewers, collaborating with other departments, and providing exceptional customer service to developers, designers, and homeowners. The Assistant Director will play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of the plan review process, promoting safe and sustainable residential development within the community.  This position reports to the Deputy Director of Planning and Development-Permitting.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management:

  • Supervise and lead the Residential Plan Review Team, providing guidance, training, and support to team members.
  • Assign and monitor workloads, ensuring timely and accurate plan reviews.
  • Foster a collaborative and productive team environment.

Plan Review and Compliance:

  • Oversee the review of residential construction plans for compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and other applicable standards.
  • Ensure that plan reviews are thorough, accurate, and completed within established timeframes.
  • Address complex or escalated plan review issues and provide technical expertise.

Process Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities to streamline and improve the plan review process.
  • Implement best practices and innovative solutions to enhance efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of plan review procedures and make necessary adjustments.

Customer Service and Communication:

  • Serve as a point of contact for developers, designers, and homeowners regarding plan review inquiries and issues.
  • Provide clear and concise communication to stakeholders about plan review requirements and outcomes.
  • Resolve conflicts and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.

Interdepartmental Coordination:

  • Collaborate with other city departments, agencies, and stakeholders to facilitate project approvals and ensure cohesive service delivery.
  • Participate in interdepartmental meetings and committees as required.
  • Represent the Residential Plan Review Team in public meetings, hearings, and presentations.

Regulatory and Policy Compliance:

  • Stay current with changes in building codes, zoning regulations, and other relevant laws.
  • Ensure the plan review team is knowledgeable about and adheres to all applicable regulations and policies.
  • Develop and update internal policies and procedures as necessary.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist in preparing and managing the department's budget, including monitoring expenditures and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation for senior management and regulatory agencies.

Professional Development:

  • Pursue continuous professional development opportunities and encourage staff to do the same.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Design, Communications, or a related field.

Experience:

Minimum of 8 years of experience in plan review, building inspections, construction management, planning, development, or a related field.

At least 4 years of supervisory or management experience.

$114,154.16 - $142,
