The Assistant Chief of Policer is responsible for providing leadership to the Campus Safety Department and assistance to the Chief of Police in maintaining departmental training and certifications, and for the completion of investigations into allegations of criminal or institutional misconduct. Located within the Department of Campus Safety, primary responsibilities of this position include the following:
- Campus Safety and Security;
- Law Enforcement; and
- Criminal and Conduct Investigations
Essential Functions:
Campus Safety and Security:
- Responsible for creating a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors
- Responsible for the protection of life and property within jurisdiction
- In the absence of the Chief of Police, Manage and lead the safety and security operations of the Department
Law Enforcement:
- Responsible for assisting with DCJS departmental accreditation
- Responsible for complying with the Jeanne Clery Act to include annual security reporting
- Conduct patrol and investigative functions to ensure compliance with Virginia code and institutional policy.
Criminal and Conduct Investigations:
- Responsible for the systematic and competent investigation of all complaints and/or matters of conduct code or criminal law violation
- Report conclusions in reporting system and obtain/advise charges as appropriate
- Responsible for identifying, preventing, and reducing safety or security risks at each campus location
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- High School diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited intuition in criminal justice or related field preferred.
- Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services certification as sworn law enforcement officer with valid firearms certification required
- Valid driver’s license required
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a certified law enforcement agency required with progressive leadership responsibility preferred
- FEMA and/or Virginia Department of Emergency Management certification as an Incident Commander preferred
Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statues, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system to include legal processes, law enforcement principles, techniques, and best practices.
- Exceptional written, oral, and social communication skills required, especially during stressful and emergency situations.
- Ability to use situational awareness, logic and reasoning in determining best outcomes and solutions.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce and student population.
- Must have good working relationships with local law enforcement and emergency services partners.
- Ability to understand and thrive in the unique working environment found at institutions of higher education.
- Ability to create, lead and manage a diverse departmental workforce.
- Ability to successfully use de-escalation techniques in conjunction with mental health professionals.
