PURPOSE:
The Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher � General Curriculum provides specialized instruction, case management, consultation, and instructional support to students with disabilities who access the North Carolina Standard Course of Study through accommodations, modifications, specially designed instruction, and related services as identified in each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). This position collaborates with general education teachers, administrators, related service providers, families, and support staff to ensure students receive a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment while promoting academic achievement, independence, and successful postsecondary outcomes.
Employees assigned to this position may serve students through inclusion, resource, co-teaching, consultation in self contained classrooms, or other general curriculum service delivery models. Assignments may vary based upon student enrollment, district needs, staffing, licensure, and applicable law.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of federal and North Carolina laws governing special education programs.
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and applicable State Board of Education policies.
- Knowledge of specially designed instruction, accommodations, modifications, differentiated instruction, and Universal Design for Learning.
- Knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices for students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, NC Occupational Course of Study, EOC/EOG, transition planning and appropriate life skills instruction.
- Ability to develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Ability to analyze assessment data and use data to improve instruction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administrators, and community agencies.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while maintaining compliance with legal timelines.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to engage in effective conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to utilize instructional technology and student information systems.
- Ability to exercise sound professional judgment in responding to student needs and emergencies.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Holds or is eligible to hold a North Carolina Exceptional Children teaching license appropriate for assignment.
- Maintains all licensure requirements established by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
- Successfully completes required district and state professional development.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months
SALARY: State Salary Schedule
FSLA STATUS: Exempt
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide specially designed instruction aligned to each student's Individualized Education Program.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs in compliance with federal and state law.
- Knowledge of NC Standard Course of Study, NC Occupational Course of Study, EOC/EOG, transition planning and appropriate life skills instruction.
- Serve as case manager for assigned students.
- Collect, analyze, and maintain student performance data.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to implement accommodations and modifications.
- Participate in eligibility, annual review, manifestation determination, reevaluation, and transition meetings.
- Develop measurable annual goals and monitor student progress.
- Administer and interpret educational assessments as appropriate.
- Utilize research-based instructional strategies to improve student achievement.
