About the role

Description

The Department of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University Mailman School of
Public Health invites applications from PhD or other doctoral-level degree holders for an
Associate Research Scientist position in tobacco control and cannabis policy research.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Associate Research Scientist will
play an integral role on NIH-funded projects examining the tobacco retail environment in
several US cities and the impact of local policies on tobacco use disparities. Primary
responsibilities include collecting, analyzing and interpreting data on the tobacco retail
environment (e.g., retailer density, marketing), population survey data, and qualitative
data (e.g., interviews with key stakeholders). The Associate Research Scientist will also
lead and contribute to peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific presentations related to
study findings. The Associate Research Scientist will assist in supervising junior
research staff and students as opportunities arise. A major component of this position
will be the development of new project ideas, including those related to cannabis policy,
and future NIH funding applications. The Associate Research Scientist will also be
strongly encouraged to develop an independent line of research and seek funding to
support these projects.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a doctoral-level degree in public health, social and behavioral
health sciences, epidemiology, or a related field, and should have extensive experience
contributing to tobacco- and cannabis-related research. Ideal candidates will have
strong mixed-methods research skills (e.g., survey data analysis, GIS methods, field
data collection, qualitative research), documented by a record of peer-reviewed
publications and presentations. Some experience supervising research staff is
preferred.
