As the SBA Loan Underwriter III – Team Lead, you will be responsible for managing a group of underwriters to provide the initial step in the bank’s overall Credit Risk Management process over the SBA loan portfolio. You will be a financial expert who analyzes the financial condition of prospective SBA borrowers and assesses how much risk First IB will be assuming if a decision is made to approve a loan request. More specifically, underwriters evaluate credit history, assets, liabilities, cash flows and other factors to determine a borrower’s ability to pay back a loan request. You will work closely with bank management and other members of the SBA lending function to ensure that loans meet SBA requirements and close in a timely manner.
What You Will Do:
- Lead a team of Underwriters and provides direction to said members in guidance of preparing loan summaries, including one-on-one discussion of loans and reviewing of work prior to submission to the SBA Credit Manager for final review for approval.
- Manage performance and workload of Underwriters alongside the SBA Credit Manager.
- Contribute to SBA Underwriting overall vision and goals and suggests credit policy changes as needed.
- Work closely with Vice President, Senior Credit Officer, Vice President, National SBA Sales Manager, and Business Development Officers (BDOs) on potential deals.
- Underwrite primarily SBA 7(a) loans, Express Loans, and 504 loans up to program maximums for a lender possessing a national lending footprint.
- Ensure request meets both SBA SOP requirement and Bank Credit Policy/Guidelines.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of current SOP requirements through continuous learning individually and through NAGGL and/or other outlets.
- Present credit write-ups in a concise, consistent, organized fashion, fully supported with proper justification/rationale.
- Use critical thinking skills/research to provide recommendations for credit decisions.
- Collect, spread, analyze and evaluate financial and related data to determine credit worthiness of prospective or existing borrowers in adherence with First Internet Bank Credit Guidelines/Policy and SBA SOP requirements.
- Perform financial analysis including pro-forma balance sheet analysis, working capital adequacy, leverage positions, collateral shortfall, ratio analysis, etc.
- Conduct complex conversations with potential business owners about prospective deals to reach consensus and conclusion.
- Perform joint calls with BDOs and prospective Borrowers to answer any questions and gain understanding of the proposed transaction.
- Notify Borrower and/or BDOs of underwriting decisions, underwriting requirements, current status, and declinations. Negotiate with Borrower/BDOs to reach positive solution for both Bank and Borrower.
- Prepare Commitment Letters in adherence to loan conditions once loan has been approved.
- Review third party reports including appraisals, business valuations, RSRAs, and Phase I/II environmental reports to ensure consistency with approval requirements.
- Analyze and craft solutions to accommodate changes to the SBA loan request on a post-approval basis via change memos.
- Assist in preparing for periodic portfolio reviews conducted by regulatory agencies, loan review and internal audit.
- Prepare draft responses to audits, reviews and regulatory exam reports as requested.
- Train new or junior staff.
- Perform other duties/projects as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
- Minimum of five years of relevant SBA lending, portfolio management and/or commercial credit experience required, or minimum three years of SBA underwriting experience within a fast-paced SBA 7(a) lending program.
