About the job:   

The Construction Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the work of contractors, District staff, and volunteers in the construction and renovation of park facilities, site furnishing and landscaping.


 

 A day in the life:   

The information provided below encompasses the typical duties and capabilities linked with this classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists the Construction Manager in coordinating and overseeing the work of contractors and subcontractors on park and facilities new construction and major renovation projects; plans and prioritizes District staff and own work; schedules project work; ensures work is accomplished on time and has the least amount of impact on programs and facility and park users; determines whether specifications are adhered to; ensures delays are minimized and project costs are monitored closely; makes minor field site layout decisions; ensures codes and regulations are adhered to; resolves issues when plans and specifications have discrepancies.
  • Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates construction staff. Identifies and provides technical and safety training for staff. Conducts coaching, conflict resolution and team building for crew.
  • Reviews and provides input on plans and specifications for park and facility construction and renovation projects; consults with the design staff in the development of parks and facilities and the selection of various components and materials.
  • Attends preconstruction and pre-application meetings with contractors and city staff.
  • Assists in developing division budget; supervises contracts; allocates resources; researches and recommends expenditures.
  • Ensures worker and site safety; addresses and resolves safety concerns.
  • Orders materials, supplies and equipment as needed; solicits quotes. Prepares estimates for projects.
  • Obtains required permits; schedules and coordinates inspections as needed.
  • Ensures a high level of communication is maintained with the Construction Manager, among District staff, contractors, and other departments.
  • Monitors, tracks and reports on project status, budgets and expenditures, and maintains accurate project files and records. 
  • Performs manual and administrative construction-related tasks as needed.
  • Acts as a Mandatory Reporter; reports incidents of child abuse/neglect.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


 

What you'll need for success: 

Strong Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of new park construction and large-scale park renovations, including landscape irrigation, drainage, grading, furnishings and amenities, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
  • Principles and practices of landscaping and horticulture;
  • Supervisory principles, practices and techniques;
  • Construction documents and blueprints.
  • Project management techniques and methods;
  • Safe work practices;
  • Construction codes and regulations; and
  • Tools materials, equipment and techniques used in the maintenance and construction of park facilities and equipment. 


 Skill and Ability to: 

  • Effectively supervise and motivate staff, including plan and direct activities of subordinate employees;
  • Strong planning, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • Effectively supervise a diverse crew;
  • Correctly calculate and apply mathematical formulas;
  • Effectively manage projects to completion; 
  • Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, including by phone, e-mail or in person;
  • Effectively manage frequent interruptions and a wide variety of personalities in a pleasant manner; 
  • Effectively initiate difficult conversations and ensure compliance with contract documents.
  • Exercise initiative and judgment in completing tasks and responsibilities;
  • Excellent planning, organization and problem-solving skills; 
  • Effectively collect, compile and analyze data; 
  • Demonstrate strong initiative; 
  • Computer competency in data entry, word processing and spreadsheet applications, operation of standard office equipment;
