General Description / Primary Purpose

The Assistant Director, Academic Advising, under the direction of an Associate Director or above, assists in the design, development and implementation of departmental processes and/or programs.

Job Function

  • Coordinate and implement mentoring and training for new COAS advising staff in the areas of reviewing the Degree Works audit tool and Student Educational Planner, and will oversee MyNest Advising Appointments and Drop In set up.
  • Assist Associate Director with Administrative Processes, for graduation certification, and administering advising surveys and providing the Qualtrics analysis.
  • The holder of this position is responsible for any NCAA and Atlantic Sun Conference bylaws and guidelines that a member of the UNF Athletic Compliance Department provides in addition to all UNF regulations. The individual must also assure that NCAA, Conference and UNF regulations are followed to the best of their knowledge and any violations thereof are reported to UNF Athletic Compliance.
  • Assist in the administration and interpretation of laws rules and policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate review of candidates for Bachelor of General Studies through the Transition Advising Referral System
  • Development and oversight of advising initiatives that promote and enhance student retention and graduation.
  • Represent College of Arts & Sciences on university committees and programs for strategic emphasis for students in transition.
  • Delivering advising presentations as requested across campus on behalf of Academic Advising
  • Attend recruitment and orientation events inside and outside the University such as Open House, College Fairs, etc.
  • Serve in a supervisory capacity in the absence of the Director or Associate Director
  • This position will have an assigned population of student for Academic Advising.

  • Knowledge of advising/counseling technique in college/university environment.
  • Skills in office management using available technology and software.
  • Basic research skills and ability to prepare reports and make recommendations.
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to coordinate projects and be self-directed.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

General supervision. The incumbent develops procedures for performing a variety of complex duties within established guidelines; has considerable freedom while the work is in process and receives instructions on new assignments.

High level of internal contact with all levels of faculty, staff, administrators and students, and external agencies.

Policy-making and/or Interpretation

This position will be responsible for interpreting policy related to Student Success, Academic Advising and making recommendations for changes to existing policies or new policies as appropriate.


Program Direction and Development

Will assist the Director of COAS advising as well as other advising units in program direction and development relative to the Student Success and Academic Advising for transition.

Responsible for adhering to rules and regulations of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) on disclosure of confidential information.

 

Required Qualifications:

This position requires either (a) Master’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; (b) Bachelor’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and four years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c ) 8 years of direct experience.
