Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) is looking for an Associate (Level 2) or Experienced (Level 3) Flight Deck Physical Human Factors Specialist to work in Everett, WA.

The flight decks that you design will be used for decades to come and connect the entire globe.

In Flight Deck, we define the look and feel of the interface for the pilots. You will be responsible for that design from conception to the end of its service life. In this role, you will work closely with pilots from all over the world to deliver industry leading flight decks.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Designs, tests, and certifies the look, feel, and operational behavior of the flight deck, from the early conceptual phase to supporting airplanes through their service life.
  • Collaborates with pilots, designers, and systems engineers to ensure flight deck interfaces and flight management automation complements the cognitive, physical, sensory, and ergonomic capabilities of our pilots.
  • Conducts and executes user evaluations and testing in state-of-the-art full-flight simulators and flight test airplanes.
  • Designs and executes human factors studies in support of product development and product evolution, ensuring continuous growth within the frontier of human-system integration.
  • Supports product development efforts to identify new and emerging technologies to increase aviation safety and add value to our products or services.
  • Supports the establishment of design requirements for changes and enhancements to the flight crew interface on existing or new commercial airplane models and testing and implementing those enhancements.
  • Develops and executes Human Factors processes in support of compliance activities and interacting with regulatory bodies, both domestic and international.
  • Utilizes Human Factors methodologies and best practices to develop, evaluate, analyze, test, and support the cognitive, interactive, ergonomic, and behavioral attributes of Boeing Flight Decks.
  • Informs and advocates for the incorporation of human performance limits in the assessment of safety risk in our product designs.
  • Works closely with the international avionics community and a diverse and global community of flight operations professionals including flight test, technical and procedural, training, customer airline, and regulator pilots.
  • Represents Boeing Commercial Airplanes Human Factors community in both corporate enterprise functional organizations as well as industry committees.

This Flight Deck Human Factors specialist will have a focus on Physical Human Factors and Ergonomics, including: anthropometrics, human modeling, control interfaces, hardware, flight management, instrument panel layouts, crew alerting, emergency equipment, failure effects and analysis, navigation, communication equipment, crew procedures, crew training, regulatory compliance, and more. 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills and Experience):

  • Bachelor ‘s degree or higher from an accredited course of study in human factors, UX/UI Design, systems engineering, industrial engineering, or psychology. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
  • Level 2: 2+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Level 3: 5+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with human factors in a manufacturing, development or research environment, or a graduate degree in a related field of study.
  • Some travel may be required, either domestic or international. Frequent travel to other local Puget Sound sites is required.
