Overview

Dialysis Specialty Nurse provides expert scientifically based illness management and health promotion for patients and The families with acute renal failure and end stage renal disease (ESRD) whose needs range from uncomplicated to complex. Dialysis Specialty Nurse utilize the nursing process to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, age appropriate care for their patients and families. They provide ESRD patient and family education, advocate and coordinate care to meet the comprehensive health needs of patients and families. The Dialysis Specialty Nurse, in collaboration with the PICU Extracorporeal team, performs diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and procedures in the treatment of acute renal failure. They utilize advanced critical thinking skills to form the dialysis plan of care and quickly identify changes in the patient's status. The Dialysis Specialty Nurse contributes to improved patient care outcomes through evidence based quality improvement efforts and by participating in quality assessment/process improvement (QAPI) in accordance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and other regulatory bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the nursing process to develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive plan of care for acute and chronic renal failure patient/families to promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • Meets the educational and informational needs to the patient/ family, hospital staff and community.
  • Integrates CMS, CDC, KDOQI and other regulatory standards and practice guidelines and assesses both process and outcome achievements to build ongoing quality improvement activities.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence of practice to expand personal professional knowledge, enhance role performance, and improve nursing care quality.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree
    • Current employees hired before September 1, 2013 are grandfathered and permitted to continue in the direct care nursing role. 
    • Direct care nurses hired after September 1, 2013 without a BSN, must complete their degree within 5 years of their hire date
  • Bachelor's Degree
    • Preferred for all direct care nurses hired after September 1, 2013. 
  • One of the following: Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
  • One of the following: Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
  • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO, 
    • MO or KS Mulistate License required within 60 days of hire
  • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications required Upon Hire
  • Specialty Certification relevant to unit's p
